Owari no Seraph

Hello my fellow nerds!

Today I bring you a manga that I am currently obsessing over: Owari no Seraph!! The manga (eng) started in June 2014, but the anime only just recently aired. Right now the manga stands at 27 chapters and the anime at 4 episodes. (May contain spoilers!! You have been warned.)

But moving on, what is it about?

"In 2012, the world allegedly comes to an end at the hands of a human-made virus, ravaging the global populace and leaving only children untouched. It is at this time that vampires emerge from the recesses of the earth. The vampires sweep the earth and claim it in a single violent stroke, subjugating the remnants of humanity and leading them beneath the surface to safety.

This "protection" comes at the price of donating blood to their captors. At the age of twelve, Yūichirō and his friend and fellow orphan Mikaela plotted to escape along with the children in Hyakuya Orphanage. However, this resulted in their deaths and Mikaela sacrifices himself in order for Yūichirō to escape and be saved by members of the Moon Demon Company, an extermination unit of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army.

Four years later, Yūichirō dedicates his life to destroy vampires and seek revenge against them for murdering his "family".

Long summary short and in layman terms, Protag Yuu is a vampire hunter, yes? Seeking revenge for his orphanage family, who he believes is dead. But plot twist! His best friend cum Antag Mikaela is alive. As a vampire, of course.

Sounds pretty cliched, isn't it? Best friends on opposite sides of a war, yet wanting to save each other. Usually it is quite clear cut that the Vamps are the evil ones, and the Humans are the good ones, but (another) plot twist! Are the Humans actually evil too?

On to the weapons in Owari no Seraph. The weapons are super duper awesome! (cue sparkly eyes) There's this girl with a scythe, which is one of my absolute favs, if you've read this post right here. There is an archer, but mostly swords. In each weapon lies a demon soul, which gives you extra abilities, depending on if you've managed to conquer the demon in mind and soul.

Now, demons. Demons are the source of magical powers. They used to be vampires who were later turned into demons under certain circumstances. They can be sealed in what the humans call the Cursed Gear. So, stronger vampires equals stronger demons, equals stronger weapons.

As you progress further through the plot, you start to realize that things are not as clear cut as they seem, and the Humans may be just as the Vampires are, and there is no good or evil.

Humans meddling with forbidden magic, Weapons with demon souls, 'Bad' guys who might be actually good?? Owari no Seraph reminds me a little of Ao no Exorcist though.

As we move on, it is revealed that Humans have been experimenting on their own kind, on the children that carry the Seraph gene. Whatever that gene is, it is related to some forbidden magic or something along those lines. Main point being: Seraph Gene weaponized equals massive power. (cough, Final Fantasy VII cough cough)

And as it turns out, all the children in Yuu and Mika's orphanage carry that gene. Mika knows of the experiments, but not Yuu. Hence Mika wanting to save Yuu from the evil humans, and Yuu wanting to save Mika from the evil vampires.

Ahh there are not enough chapters for me to survive on! I need to know what happens next! It's getting so exciting. Do go watch/read if you haven't! It's definitely worth the time spent, plus the artwork is pretty good too.

Nerd out!
