A feast for the senses awaits visitors as SGCC 2019 gears up for another exciting array of activities!

SINGAPORE, 28 November 2019 – The countdown has begun to Singapore’s premier pop culture event, SGCC 2019, happening from 7 to 8 December at Marina Bay Sands across Halls A, B and C. Fans of all ages and fandoms can look forward to two full days of exciting activities that will not disappoint.

Be enthralled by a wide range of activities such as meet and greet sessions, limited edition purchases, talent spotting, solving puzzles & games, Championships of Cosplay and more at SGCC 2019 – It’s the perfect opportunity to discover what makes you POP!

An event that will have gamers at the edge of their seats over two days, will be the crowning of PVP Esports @ Singapore Comic Con by Singtel’s community league featuring Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Dota 2. If you’re into dressing up like your favourite superheroes, come down and meet with your favourite cosplayers and even take part in the Cosplay Parade happening on 7 Dec at 3.30pm. Just be sure to not leave your selfie sticks at home as you wouldn't want to miss a photo-opportunity like never before.

For the talented creatives who have always wanted to get a chance to work on a TV series, get your portfolios ready. 108 Media will be premiering Fluorescent Black, a dark sci-fi TV series based on the cult favourite graphic novel published by Heavy Metal Magazine. On top of sharing juicy details about the series in their panel, 108 Media will also be holding talent spotting reviews for artists and writers to work on the series.

According to the creator of the series, Mr Matthew Wilson, “It’s a very distinctive setting, made more distinctive by the central characters, who are dealing with issues you don’t commonly see in a sci-fi context. This TV series tells a crime story, like Breaking Bad, but set in the world of gene-tech-gone-wrong.”

For those who love to solve puzzles and mysteries, good news, you are going to love the Heist! Head down to Curious Chimeras booth and be prepared to create a mystery story right at the convention hall - it’s time to put your thinking hat on!

Milkcananime X Tanjong Pagar GRC and Radin Mas SMC HALLOWEEN Stickers

In collaboration with Tanjong Pagar GRC and Radin Mas SMC, we created a pack of "Halloween Stickers" (WhatsApp and Telegram) for the "FRIGHT NIGHT" event held on 26 October 2019. This annual Halloween extravaganza attracts thousands of boys and ghouls, all dressed in outlandish and spooky costumes. They will all come in flocks to challenge the Scare Houses and all kind carnival activities. Taking place in Tiong Bahru Park, the Tilting Train is an iconic feature where children climb and play onboard. Thus, we recreate the Tilting Train to come alive and be 'Kawaii'. Our mascot Miwa Haruka joins the Tilting Train for a Halloween ride!

Singapore Comic Con interview with Joey Spiotto

Singapore Comic Con had the privilege to catch up with Joey Spiotto, author and illustrator for a short interview. Perhaps many will know him from children books such as “Attack! Boss! Cheat Code! A Gamer's Alphabet”, “Firefly: Back from the Black” and “Alien next Door”.

Joey has created artwork for numerous clients including Lucasfilm, Marvel, Microsoft, Loot Crate, among many others. Joey is a regularly featured artist at the world-famous Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles where he’s had several solo exhibitions featuring his hit print series “Storytime” - where he turns some of our favourite movies, musicians, TV shows and video games into covers of children’s books from our youth.

Before becoming an independent artist, Joey worked as a concept artist in the film and video game industry on such titles as “The Polar Express” for Warner Bros. as well as “Dead Space” and “The Sims” franchises at Electronic Arts.

We put together a summary on the casual interview between SGCC and Joey Spiotto.

Host: What inspires you? What drives you?

Joey: I am inspired by my family. I watch a lot of cartoons with my kids and even draw inspiration when my kid reacts to something.

Host: Tell us about your experience being on the concept art team for the Polar Express.

Joey: Being able to work with Warner Bros was a dream come true. I learnt a lot about film production and how to create concept art. It was a wonderful experience.

Host: What is your best takeaway from working in the Video Game and Film industry.

Joey: The biggest takeaway is teamwork - How to get along and work together towards a common goal.

Host: What is the meaning behind the moniker ‘Joebot’?

Joey: Well, my name is Joey and I love robots. So I brought them together and.. 'Joebot'.

Host: Are there stories you would like to share to inspire fans?

Joey: I started working with great companies such as Gallery 1988, 20^th Century Fox and Titan Books. I also got involved with a lot of official art shows such as Avengers Art Show with Marvel and Disney. With Titan Books, they basically let me do whatever I want in this project called “Alien Next Door” which I absolutely love it!

Host: How has the change in pop culture affected you and your craft?

Joey: The pop culture landscape has changed quite a bit since the creation of the internet. The internet has brought so many wonderful things. And with social media, artists can share their artwork and get feedback from the audience.

Host: Any advice for artists of the younger generation?

Joey: This line requires a lot of hard work, time, focus and dedication.

Host: In three words, what is Singapore Comic Con to you?

Joey: Opportunity (for) New Inspiration.

Indeed, I agree that a lot of hard work, time and dedication is needed not just for one to survive, but to excel in the creative industry today. May I also add the word ‘sacrifice’. As Bruce Lee ever said “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but the one who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” Such is the sacrifice for one in order to hone and master a skill.

World Renowned Comic Artists, Livio Ramondelli & Creees Hyunsung Lee Part of Stellar Guest Lineup at Singapore Comic Convention 2019!

It's time to mark your calendar as we reveal more star-studded guest appearances at the upcoming Singapore Comic Con (SGCC) 2019, happening from 7-8 December this year. Joining the stellar line-up are comic artists, Livio Ramondelli and Creees Hyunsung Lee.

Known for his work on Transformers for IDW Publishing, Livio’s other key credits include Battlestar Galactica, Pacific Rim as well as DC Universe Online for Sony/DC Comics. Joining him is the up & coming talented comic artist, Creees who is currently working on Lab Raider for Black Mask Studios. Some of his previous works include projects for Image, Dynamite and Chapterhouse Comics. Additionally, Joey Spiotto, the author & illustrator of the upcoming book "Grumpy Unicorn" from Scholastic and Prema-Ja, a freelance artist hailing from Thailand and Grand Prix recipient at the Silent Manga Audition in 2013 will be part of the exciting line-up.

Get ready and prepare for the event of the year as you get a chance to be up close & personal and tap into their minds of what it takes to be an artist/illustrator and what it takes to bring their characters to life.

Prema-Ja is a Thai freelance artist. Her short comic, Sky Sky, received the Grand Prix at the Silent Manga Audition in 2013. Her Bachelor's thesis, Bokbig comic, was published and won the Gold Award at the International Manga Award in 2014. She also made 3 graphic novels published by Fullstop publishing house. Moreover, she worked as a character designer on an animated feature film, The Legend of Muaythai: 9 Satra (2018). Apart from these projects, she also self-published her works relating to the human-animal bond. The tones in the stories are mostly funny and heartwarming.

My Cosfest 2019 Loot!

Hey sistas!

As some of you may know, Cosfest 2019 had just come to a close last weekend. Just as some background information for those unfamiliar with this event, Cosfest is an international cosplay convention in Singapore that’s been running for over 16 years in Singapore (if I’m not wrong). It’s now one of the most renowned cosplay conventions in Asia and held annually at D’Marquee, Downtown East, so if you’ve missed it this year, no worries because you can always give it a go next year!

This year was actually my virgin experience going to Cosfest and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the amount and quality of the merchandise sold. Of course Cosfest isn’t as big as Doujima, which I went for earlier this year and had much greater international representation, but nevertheless, the environment was definitely pretty vibrant. There were throngs of people decked out in their cosplay costumes and a lineup of performances by various interest groups (although sorry to say, some were definitely very cringe-worthy, but that’s a story for another time, read: never to be told).

Although Cosfest serves as a safe space for people to showcase their costumes and mingle with like-minded individuals within the Singaporean anime community, my cousin and I went there mainly to buy fan artists’ merchandise. In fact, we were so hardcore about it that we actually made a Google Doc prior to going to the event with our hastily-compiled research on the different artists and booths that were going to be there (we are the epitome of true anime trash).

Sadly, I didn’t really take any pictures of the event itself, because I was too overwhelmed by the sea of people and on the lookout for merch, but what I did take were pictures of my entire loot from Cosfest. Thus begins yet another self-indulgent post where I ramble on about my personal fantasies and obsessions!

Okay so first off, I bought Bakusquad and Tododeku prints. I actually swept the entire convention twice with my cousin and still somehow managed to miss these precious gems until my friend told me about them, so of course with my complete lack of fiscal discipline, I went back for a third round just to blow my cash. Also, I just wanted to say that the Tododeku print was probably my most treasured purchase of the day because I am completely in love with the ship and this was everything I could ever have dreamed of.

Speaking of BNHA, I bought a bunch of miscellaneous items, mostly consisting of stickers and keychains. The sticker pack with the entire main cast was exceptionally cute and my friend and cousin also immediately bought them as well. Also, the “midoriyaki” and “takoyaki” stickers were sold at a relatively secluded booth in an area that some people might have easily missed out because it wasn’t under the main tent, but they were SO. ADORABLE. The Kaminari and Todoroki keychains were an instant buy for me too because they were in a Pokemon crossover and I guess I’m just a goner for both things.

Here are some more random prints I got. Fun fact: the Oikawa one was one of my first few purchases and the shop didn’t have a non-translucent bag for me to store it so I had to sheepishly make my way around with a picture of a very hot, half-naked man.

I especially loved the Todoroki notepad because I like cute merch that is also actually useful. Guess my friends will be receiving notes from me on that paper for a while. The Todoroki pin was super cute too (random note: there was so much merch of him slurping soba, not complaining though) although enamel pins were probably the most expensive of all the merch there because of the material and customization.

Special mention to my Kurapika and Leorio prints! The girl mending the booth was also a fellow Leopika fan and immediately noticed my Kurapika shirt when I approached the booth so obviously I had to give her my money right? Also while you’re reading this, remember to stan Leopika.

Here are some more random stickers I bought of Ghibli characters, Hunter x Hunter characters and Pokemon. The Pokemon gachapon stickers were super high quality and cute (they have a matte finish) and the guy was really nice. I wanted to buy his whole shop really, but homegirl was broke.

This artist sold really cute sticker packs from a number of shows besides Kuroko no Basuke and Shokugeki no Soma (e.g. The Promised Neverland, Pokemon) but I decided to get these two because the respective anime were quite under-represented and I hardly ever see their merch + anything cute just gets a yes from me.

I was so pleasantly surprised to find more Bungou Stray Dogs merch because it’s such a great yet underrated anime (everyone please do go watch it, it’s the best). The Shin Soukoku sticker was something I never knew I needed in my life.

I also chanced upon this artist who sold really beautiful original art and she happened to have a set of Free! characters. They also sold Rei but it apparently wasn’t part of the set (it had a slightly different background too) so I just decided to give him a pass, though I’m somewhat regretting not buying him now.

Of course I would buy something from The Legend of Zelda every convention I go to, so here is a set of BOTW polaroids. They had beautiful Link and Zelda prints too but it was sold out by the time I got there and they weren’t selling their display piece so this was all I could lay my hands on (it was also the last piece so lucky me!).

And now, I present to you the most random purchase I’ve ever made in my life. I had no reason to get it, but neither did I have a reason not to, because honestly who wouldn’t get something like this if this was the first thing they saw when they turned the corner?

In case you’re wondering if there’s any inside fandom joke to be told here, there is none. They’re literal ass stickers. When I first saw them, I instinctively turned to my cousin and said “do you want some ass stickers?”, to which the booth owner actually heard and replied without missing a heartbeat, “yeah do you want some ass stickers! Only once a year at Cosfest!” My cousin and I just started laughing uncontrollably while the girl just stared at us with a deadpan expression and waited for us to fork over our money for the ass stickers. Probably the most memorable encounter I’ve had there.

Needless to say, I can safely conclude that I spent over $100 here, although I already expected this from the start knowing my poor spending habits when it comes to anime. I don’t regret it though, because first of all I’m getting good stuff, and second of all, this is just one of many ways to show support to local artists who have put in a lot of effort into designing and producing their merch to sell to all of us weebs. Monetary transactions aren’t the only way to show your support; a simple comment or DM on their works online could make their day as well!

KidZ & Heritage at KidZania Singapore

KidZania is a venue where all of your senses play a keyrole both for the adults and children. They explore this mini-town escapade; a paradise to unleash their inner talents, creativeness and to be part of the adult universe. They gain educational background of individual systems sponsored by the actual companies. The little ones are allowed to play pretend by the given role from individual stations on both lower and upper floor that the building boasts.

Anyone young at heart would enjoy being a part of the KidZania crew as they join in the adventure alongside their little counterparts. Parents are seen hovering close-by with camera constantly flashing as the children put on their "adult pants" and managing odd jobs. As a first timer, you watch the surrounding with wide eyes, and soaking in the boisterous atmosphere.

After Max had given me a short briefing of the establishment, it was my turn to run amok with my camera as well as take in the lively atmosphere. Out of nowhere, the shrieking of a siren caught me off guard when a mini vehicle with bold letters etched on the side "AMBULANCE" driven by an adult inches forth as another makes sure the pathway is safe for everyone else. To my amazement, I spotted a group of children riding at the back of the ambulance. Each of them were dressed in paramedic attire acquiring a serious expression at the ready to hop off and rescue the "victim" or digesting information given by the friendly staff.

Enthusiastic parents walked along the vehicle to watch their offspring living off their dream. Amidst them, I was tagging along to stand at the sideline and tune in to their teaching. It was truly inspiring to witness these new generation embracing a pretense of their fabricated universe. If only KidZania existed during our era, it would have been a blast and as for myself, a tug of war with my parents.

Situated at the SCDF section, a bright fiery-red truck was parked as well. Everyone of us have a fascination to be able to take a joyride in these big beast. Youngsters gathered at the area donning matching coats while waiting to zoom off. Off to put out fire at the make-shift hotel and these young firefighters caused an adorable commotion.

Peeking through different windows, my excitement rises higher as I envisioned myself trinkled by the various devices such as: being a radio VJ for KISS 92FM. As a teenager from the 2000s, it was my dream to be Radio Presenter to chat in crisp English Language behind the microphone and announce chart-topping songs from across the globe. And to invite celebrities over to my talk show. Although this was the closest to reliving my fantasy.

In KidZania, the kids are allowed to play the role of either a Radio Presenter or a Technical Assistant; they bust out acclaimed hit music or serve the listeners ground-breaking news. At the same time, they are educated on what happens behind the scene. They play an important role so that the radio programmes run smoothly without any hiccups.

For this "KidZ & Heritage" event, there are fringe activities around the city that shine a spotlight on Singapore’s founding and development, such as a ‘Heritage Photo Booth by Canon Singapore’, travelling around the City in a Trishaw, a ‘History of Singapore Trivia Hunt’, and the "Colouring activity by Milkcananime", which features some of the old heritage games and buildings of Singapore. Children and parents can take one of these colouring sheets and use their creativity to bring the drawing to life! And only a few feet away, kawaii anime merchandises laid neatly on a booth caught my attention. And our artist Max was busy shuffling between his booth and supervising the kids in the colouring. Such activities further enhance the visitors' experience in KidZania.

Time for lunch? KidZania boasts several stops to appease your rumbling belly, in my case, Pizza Hut was my next stop. A cluster of people hogged the front window when my curiosity led me over that space just then, a group of youngsters were standing in row adjacent to spacious metal table. They were being trained diligently to create pizza! Once again, my jaw dropped low a twinge of regret that I was not part of this generation. Mind you, cleanliness is a requirement which they have to go through meticulously.

KidZania has interactive facilities for everyone, including several cafe-theme restrooms equipped with Wifi. Everyone who visited KidZania seemed to be happy and satisfied. I certainly enjoyed the time spent beneath the sky-theme rooftop and learning that this place was more than just a play-time for the children. At the end of the day, they leave home further acquainted with knowledge.
