Devi's Japan Travels Part 9: Nara and its countryside

Sunday, November 26, 2017 / No Comments
Judging by the titles of my blogs, this trip consisted out of countrysides. Well, mostly. After our Tottori trip we spent our last night at Ujitei, and in the morning it was time to say goodbye to the Uji family. Taeka gave us some homemade presents I am using daily nowadays. Taeka is very sweet, throughout our stay she kept on giving us stuff. We also got some dinner and kinako yakipan before which is DELICIOUS. I am already a big fan of kinako so I was ommm-ing and nommm-ing. Yuka also came with An-chan luckily so we could say goodbye. Before we left we took pictures with the family, it feels like they are our Japanese family now.

I really feel blessed that I have these awesome, creative and warmhearted people in my life. Meeting people like them is a great blessing while traveling, it is what it makes worthwhile for me. After one last look at the house, it was time to go.
We were on our way to Nara, which was quite the drive from Ujitei. It would take us about 3 hours to get there on the highway but in reality it's a bit longer because of traffic and stops on the way. Driving on the highway is such a blast (except for the high toll fares, yigh), again we see the cute city signs that apparently show a picture of what the place is famous for. Also the robots waving their arm show us the way whenever there's a construction are fun to see, and we even saw some sakura trees on the side of the road!

Kasai City, never heard of it but isn't the sign cute and pwetty??

 Arigato, Mr. Robotto!

Sakura trees! Hidden behind the wall

Miki city, never heard of it never been there but... cute sign!

We passed by Osaka, entering the prefecture we saw this sign. Of course the main attraction of Osaka would be the castle as shown here

Such busy roads! Trucks everywhere! We have definitely left the countryside... We are not in Kansas anymore Toto! (But we ARE in Kansai.. get it?? lol)

Arriving in the city, we decided to go to the park. But first we went to the post office, which has a sign similar to a T thus easy to spot, and got some cash. Sometimes it's hard finding an ATM but the post office usually has ATM's that takes international cards as well. Convenience stores don't always take our cards. The post office ATM accepted our UOB card so no problem there. I know from experience it also accepts maestro cards. After getting some cash, we went on our way to get some food, seeing the city while driving.

We found a sushi place, a chain called Kura sushi which is extremely cheap and the quality is reasonable. I think we paid a bit less than 2000 yen (about 24 SGD) for the two of us and we ate A LOT I can tell ya. It had the ipad order and personal conveyor belt service, whoosing your sushi to your table. You could put in the trays at the opening on the table (see picture) and for every 5 pieces of (empty) sushi trays a game appeared on the ipad, if you won you got a prize (see picture, above the ipad). You could hear the game being played all over the place, the sound of the losing-tune reigned though. We won a cute character and gave it to a kid on our way out.

After eating we went to the park and saw some deers, temples and the usual tourist attractions. One main difference we noticed was that there were way more flowers blooming in Nara, which was great! We have suffered the long-and-cold-winter aftermaths this year making the sakura bloom very late. The weather was also amazing, nice and warm (and more important: blue skies!). I won't put too many pictures of the park as many people have been here and it's a well-known tourist place.

There were a lot of Chinese tourists laughing and screaming and running away from the deers. I heard a lot of 'xiaolu hen keai', which they were indeed!

So grateful to finally see some sakura.. readers who have read my previous blogs know how much pain and suffering we went through to see some (lol). You can see a wedding photoshoot on the left, great season for some beautiful shots.

I like wide fields, and Nara park has really nice wide places

..as well as cute little paths

It was beginning to get dark so we decided to go to my friends' place. My friend Linda whom I knew from my internship in Osaka, invited us to stay at her place. She used to have a raw food cafe and made the yummiest healthy foods I have had back then. I even volunteered at her cafe for a week to learn more about raw food and gotten to know her parents as well. Her father and I had an adventure in Osaka once, trying to find some kitchen tools at a market I wanted to buy for personal use. We drove out of the hustle and bustle of the city once more, and went to the countryside once more. I should change the title of the blog to Devi's Japan Countryside Travels.. Again, we saw some gorgeous places and a beautiful sunset.

Quaint little villages on the way

Yas yas yasss! More sakura, even if it's getting dark

Crossing Nabari river after sunset, the water was really still so the reflection was beautiful

It's getting dark, where are we??

 Are we there yet?

It was getting dark and we were quite lost, it's not easy finding a countryside house in the mountains.  After finding the place we were quite surprised, I did not expect a place like this! It was really in the middle of nowhere, an old house. It was pitch black by the time we arrived. Linda welcomed us into her house, which was partly renovated with a new bathroom and toilet. The rest was left as it was, an old Japanese countryside house, very authentic. Linda and her partner cooked us some (of course healthy) really nice foods. I expected nothing less, as I met her at her raw food cafe so I knew she was well-versed in organic and healthy foods.

All the ingredients were organic produce and homegrown

Doesn't it all look healthy? Apparently her partner used to be a cook and it shows! Look at that perfect tamago-yaki! He turned out to have the same birthday as me as well. Of course, because I am a good cook as well (ahem ahem..). Afterwards she served her signature raw blueberry cake she made because it was hubby's birthday. So sweet of her! And after that (we were reaally stuffed at this point) they even made some raw ice cream!

Linda knows everything about the Vitamix and does demonstrations and sells them too as shown on her blog

Boy was I full after this.. I got a present as well, Linda gave me a haori. I could choose from 3 colors and I chose the purple one. That was very sweet of her. She was wearing a traditional kimono as well which suited her really well. That was my second present in 1 day and it wasn't even my birthday! So luckyyy..

Together with Linda, she started wearing kimono's everyday since about a year. She has a lot of kimono's from her grandmother and they look very good on her. Me on the other hand, I am a bit too fat for it lolz..

Chillin' & drinkin'

After having some drinks I took a bath: they filled a bathtub the old-school Japanese way where you heat the bathwater from outside with wood in an outside boiler connected to the bathtub. It's tricky as the water was boiling hot when it entered the bathtub, best not to touch.. After taking our baths we were so tired, the futons were ready and so were our tired bodies to get cozy in them.

Road trip day 18: Kyoto, our last destination

We slept like babies, I woke up early and took some pictures of the house. It was gorgeous to me and I would like a place like this too, Ujitei style renovated. No worries, I got permission from Linda to post pictures.

From left to right: main entrance, kitchen, living room

Kitchen workplace, and to the left the kitchen

The kitchen, I love the wood works in this house, makes it feel nice and cozy

The wooden detail of the mirror is quite lovely, I like this style

Sorry for making a mess Linda!

The sliding shoji doors with tatami floor mats, the main entrance of the house

We had some green smoothies, Linda's signature smoothie, and healthy foods as breakfast. I got another present from Linda, a bag with familia de linda written on it (I use it often nowadays). I am part of her family yay! Very cute bag. We went to see her neighbour's house, the old geezer asked me if I was 10 years older than my husband! Very direct and insulting for a Japanese! I lol'ed. We took some pictures together outside of her house and checked out her little garden.

On our way to the car we saw some friends of Linda, very nice people. Hope to see them next time I visit. We went on our way to Kyoto, our final destination. Our road trip is almost coming to an end, but not before we explore Kyoto. More on that in my next blog! Vrrrooommm...

Fireworks, Should We See It from the Side or the Bottom? The Manga

Saturday, November 25, 2017 / No Comments
Hello people! While many of you are soaking in the crazy but fun bliss of C3 AFA Singapore 17 (apparently, the name has gotten longer...or is it just me?), I am sure there is a handful of us that would rather steer clear of the mad rushes. Anyway, because the holidays are here for a lot of people, there seems to be a bunch of stuff everywhere! The new Pokemon movie, the new Pokemon movie, and the new Pokemon movie. Sorry, I just couldn't resist because strangers had been talking about it while waiting to catch some monster opposite my flat! Sure, they were really loud. Well, there is another movie though...but I am going to talk about its manga instead.

I have no idea what is with the even longer titles these days, but I shall still list them down. Uchiage Hanabi, Shita Kara Miru ka? Yoko Kara Miru ka? or Fireworks, Should We See It from the Side or the bottom? For those who are watching the movie starting November 30th (this coming Thursday!)...actually, I think everything is automated now, right? Anyway, you could just say Fireworks. Incidentally, that happens to be the title of the Chinese translation (when translated back to English). Convenient, but absolutely lazy and missing some very important points.

As its very long title suggests, the premise of this story revolves around the theme of perception, and how differences in such could lead to some drastic consequences. I shall not spoil the story here, especially when I don't even know just how similar or different the two versions are. However, I can say that the manga has a continuity that will pick up from a rather common yet still effective plot device. If you fancy stuff like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, then you might just appreciate Fireworks!

The manga has an easily likeable style, quickly resonating with the general outlook towards life from the perspectives of a group of students. One could also feel the odds and ends of summer throughout the story, and naturally the fireworks that conclude one's memories of the season. But there aren't actually any fireworks in the first volume (I was left rather dumbfounded after reading 160+ pages), so perhaps there would be some in the second book or something. I am looking forward to that! As for the movie, I don't know...maybe I would watch it eventually.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

Thursday, November 23, 2017 / No Comments
Welcome back my nuggets!!

Anyone here a fan of Animal Crossing? I tried the series on the 3DS, but it's pretty time consuming to play consistently, and personally I felt it was a tad boring to do the same things over and over again. My console is a 3DS XL as well, so I didn't want to lug it around everyday and only play it for just a bit. If you're like that too, then here's a solution!!

the initial start up screen!

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp!!

It's an app you can download from your play store or app store, and it's not restricted to japan only download as well~~ I didn't have to specially go to the Japan play store to get it woohoo! You can link it up to your Nintendo account to make sure your save progress doesn't disappear if you uninstall the app later on.

It's much easier to play too, plus it's handy to have it on your phone as a casual game instead of carrying a separate console. Gameplay-wise, it still is Animal Crossing, so there's a whole bunch of catching bugs and fishes, picking fruits and shells, and handing them over to whichever 'villagers' request for them! However, for Pocket Camp you're not mayor of a town but instead you sort of own your own camp, and you can invite animals to over to be your campers of sorts.

First off, customize yourself!! I'm quite surprised at the variety of options right off the bat! You don't get to choose your clothing, but you will get to purchase some at the marketplace later in game. I managed to customize one that looks quite like me, hehehee.

You get to customize your camper van and expand the size, as well as visit other players' camps and befriend them! I'm not too sure if only certain camps have specific bugs or fishes, but if you're at a loss you can always check your friends' camps to see what sort of items they're selling!

the seat he requested for!

When you fulfill requests from the animals, you get to up their friendship level! When it's high enough they'll give you some gifts, and you'll get to invite them to your camp if you hit their furniture requirements as well.

You do need friends to help you get into the mines to source for ores, and I'm not sure if it's a one time thing since I haven't unlocked it yet, but yes, make more friends!!

The marketplace changes every couple of hours, if I'm correct, so that means that you are sort of forced to take breaks every now and then, which is good, because please take care of your eyes! The clothing shop at the marketplace sells only one category of clothes each time, so it might be shirts, socks/shoes, or dresses. I managed to get this dress I really liked after seeing it on another player!

The graphics are really nice, and look at the color palette!! I'm playing on a Note 3, and it still operates rather smoothly. Only thing to take note of: the servers might be a tad laggy because of the high volume of players, but have patience!

Right, I'm off to play more Pocket Camp now, I'm severely lacking time after getting a bunch of games; where do I get more time???! I do have another post lined up on Pokemon hacked roms; I've been dedicating all my time on them lately, and it's a huge treasure trove to cover. Well, I mean I've been playing them, not hacking them- hats off to the hackers!!

Tata for now~

The iPhone X Mini Theatre

Sunday, November 19, 2017 / No Comments
Everything started unexpectedly on a very, very, very early morning...technically, it was closer to midnight than dawn. However, something still happened somewhere, and it began with a heated argument. Kind of.

Come on, *****! Pick up your **** ******* phone! You are only pretending to sleep, so quit ignoring me! Who the **** do you think you are, huh! You aren't some royal ****, so listen up...get your own ****** **** phone!!!

Eeeeeeeeeeeh! But I don't want to go out! Going out makes me tired and sleepy! Besides, my dainty feet will grow blisters if I have to queue for more than a minute. Aren't you my big, strong man? Go get it for me, won't you? I mean, you dig that stuff, right?

Boy: So, this is it?
Girl: Yeah, my girlfriends said so. I am not very sure myself though...
Boy: Well, should I open it?
Girl: I could if you want. After all, I am the one who brought you into this...
Boy: Don't be silly! I mean, this isn't going to go off or anything, right?
Girl: At the count of three?
Boy: Okay, one...
Girl: Two...
Boy: And...

So I was shopping for groceries at the supermarket after school, and out of nowhere this suspicious-looking man appeared with a black envelope that had no label whatsoever. He quickly thrusted it into my hands and disappeared into the crowd! I thought it might be poison, so I promptly disposed it into the bin. My classmate said I should have had opened the envelope though...a love letter, perhaps? But why would anybody seal up a love letter in black? Anyway, more rice?

Oooooh...what is this? I feel as if I had just taken a trip to the unknown! I can't quite describe this sensation...somebody help? Gosh, I wish I could tell the rest how this feels...hmm, such a delicate beauty! What are the odds of having eyes this sparkly all of a sudden? I feel like an anime character...hold it, I am an anime character! Are you sure I can use this?

Boy: Dad says he is buying me a mobile phone...
Girl: Ah, so our crazy, little plaything has finally driven him nuts?
Boy: I believe so. Is your mum taking you shopping?
Girl: Yeah, I saw her slotting in my Dad's credit card.
Boy: Who says hard work doesn't pay off?
Girl: Who says.

The new iPhone X. Well, it won't remain new forever...
