Anime review: Jujutsu Kaisen

Sunday, April 18, 2021 / No Comments

Warning: this post contains anime spoilers.

When Jujutsu Kaisen was first released on 3rd October 2020, it became instantly popular among fans. The twenty-four episode anime was animated by Mappa who also animated other shows such as Shingeki No Kyojin season 4, Terror In Resonance, The God Of High school and popular gambling anime, Kakegurui. Recently, Mappa has also announced a possible sneak peak of Chainsaw Man on its 10th anniversary event on June 27, 2021.

So what is Jujutsu Kaisen about? Jujutsu Kaisen, translated into English as "sorcery fight", follows our protagonist by the name of Itadori Yuji who got caught up in the jujutsu world after he decided to eat one of Sukuna's finger in an attempt to fight off the cursed spirits that were drawn to Sukuna's finger after it was unsealed.

Shortly after, Itadori was introduced to Gojo Satoru who more or less did not give Yuji any other choice then to choose his own death. But when Yuji was able to eat another of Sukuna's fingers and still have claim over his body, Gojo had the brilliant idea of bringing Yuji back to Jujutsu High.

Yuji informing Gojo that he ate Sukuna's finger

Prior to watching the first episode, I expected Jujutsu Kaisen to be a twelve episode anime where Yuji would travel around with Megumi and Nobara to exorcise cursed spirits and then having fun, but what was ahead was so much more unexpected and darker than I thought it would be. Instead of a wholesome high school anime, we're faced with Yuji and his friends going on missions and having to face powerful villains like Mahito, Jogo and Hinami. And while we follow Yuji as he faces the fact that he cannot save people who were turned into cursed spirits, it allows us to understand where Yuji is coming from and experience the feeling of helplessness when faced with the tough decision of having to exorcise them.

Apart from the intriguing plot and amazing animation that Mappa has provided, one thing that really struck me was the backstories of the characters and the fact that Gege Akutami, the mangaka, portrayed the female characters as strong and independent who can match up to their male counterparts, while still retaining their femininity, causing fans to compare Jujutsu Kaisen and Shingeki No Kyojin with each other in terms of having independent female characters in a show that is targeted mainly towards males. While the anime provided us with strong female characters who instantly became popular such as Nobara, Maki and Utahime, we were also given Miwa, a character who is typically seen as useless. However, Miwa's character was the one that never fails to amaze me. Even though she considers herself useless, she has proven herself to be considerate, hardworking, determined and although not as physically strong as the rest as seen when she battled against Zenin Maki in the Kyoto Goodwill event arc, she is strong in a way that she does not give up easily. Overall, I personally feel that Miwa is one of the more underrated characters alongside Shoko Ieiri, the doctor of Jujutsu High.

Nobara demonstrating her cursed technique

While many fans were spoilt for choice when it came to deciding who their favorite character is, ask anyone who is one of their favorites and the name "Gojo Satoru" is bound to come up. It is easy to see why Gojo is easily everyone's favorite- tall, good looking, funny and most of all, the most powerful sorcerer in the Jujutsu world, this man who has the sky in his eyes easily raked up a good number of fan girls across the world. With his stunning character design, he is easily the most popular character throughout the entire show. In addition, his complex character makes him all the more interesting. The amount of cursed technique and power that Gojo holds is also enough to convince you why he is one of the best characters in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Gojo showing off his cursed technique, hollow purple

While the anime is filled with heartbreaking and exciting moments, we were given a snippet of the characters relaxing and having fun at the end of each episode which is called "Jujutsu stroll". Jujutsu Stroll is definitely one of the highlights that made Jujutsu Kaisen even more enjoyable. Much like taking a hot bath at the end of a tiring and stressful day, Jujutsu Stroll allows viewers to escape from the pain that the main anime has given us for a little while.

All in all, Jujutsu Kaisen doesn't lack anything- amazing animation and visuals, well written characters and side characters that are not outshined by the main characters and catchy openings and endings, Jujutsu Kaisen will definitely go down as one of the best shounen anime of our time.

Thank you for reading this review, I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I had fun writing this!

Until the next time,

Rika ^-^

Anime : Cells at Work

Sunday, April 11, 2021 / No Comments

Have you heard of the anime called (Hataraku Saibo) Cells at Work? I chanced upon this anime in Netflix while looking for some nice anime to enjoy during the weekend.

I have completed season 1 and I find it is a cute and interesting anime to watch. The characters are drawn so well especially the dramatic expression seen on red blood cells. It does give me a good laugh just looking at the expression.

When she sees a bacteria

Have you ever wonder how each different cells function in your body? When you are sick, how your body works to heal itself to gain immunity and prevent infection or virus from recurring? When you have allergic reaction, how will your body react and overcome the allergic reaction. When you are injured, how and which cells react to quickly heal your wound?

This anime shows each different cells how they function and what they do. The most amazing part is how all the cells work hand in hand to help the body functions in daily life.

I feel that this anime is very educational for students who are interested in biology or someone who is interested in biomedical or medical field. For example, sneezing is a kind of mechanism to push out the bacteria/ virus out of the body system. It is illustrated like a machine system in missile style to sneeze out. I like it how the anime is described and explained so! In each episode, a small introduction of each cells is indicated and also mentions what are their function within the body.

Let me introduce some of the favourite characters I like!

Red blood cells

When her other members and her see the bacteria

Initially, AE 3803 (her red blood cell code ID) is over dramatic and she is often lost during her delivery of oxygen and carbon dioxide. I guess she is weak at directions, she can’t even differentiate where the delivery of oxygen or carbon dioxide location is. I realised that she is the one that gives me the most laugh because of her different expression. Each of her expression is expressed in the way of what situation she faced.

Platelets starting to work

Don’t they look like kids attending kindergarten school? Well, they are the problem solver! I love their positivity and quick actions to quickly solve the situation at hand. Small kids with big solution.

White Blood cell (Cool guy, hope I can see his other eye)

White blood cells reporting that he has eliminated the bacteria

He and his team are consistently looking out for bacteria to kill. They can be everywhere in different parts of the body roaming around like hyenas searching for prey. This is their job to keep bacteria at bay and prevent them to further attack body immune system.

The smile she gave while killing the bacteria

I like how she fosters young red blood cells and educating until all the red blood cells graduate. It is such a tough task. No wonder, she is given the ‘motherly’ aura. Well, not only does she foster young red blood cells, she uses big sword to kill off bacteria with a smile. How eerie..

Well, this is season 1 review! My rating for this anime is 8/10. Reason being is that I like watching medical-related shows. I hope that they can add different storyline for each cell and not always too focused on red blood cells. It would be wonderful to begin the storyline from the "platelets".

There is season 2! Sadly, Netflix has not added season 2 yet. I am so excited for season 2. I hope there will be more variety and more information added in. Never stop learning and adding new knowledge to your dictionary!

Doctor X

Saturday, April 10, 2021 / No Comments

I came across to this drama called Doctor X. I was astounded just after watching the first episode. This drama illustrates the healthcare system in Japan, particularly a university hospital.  It showcases the daily routine of what doctors and nurses faced and how they managed different types of patients.

In my opinion, an individual who chooses his/her professional as a doctor is a lifetime commitment towards mankind. Their first priority is always saving people and in doing so, has to commit long hours in dedicating in their jobs. They also do volunteer works in the undeveloped countries, providing the needy with necessary healthcare. Not only are they situated in hospitals, they are situated everywhere such as in war zones, natural disaster zones etc. They consistently research on new and better drugs which brings healthcare system to a greater height thus improving everyone standard of living in healthcare. Other than that, they conduct and attend seminar within their association to gain knowledge and expose to themselves to more medical care possibilities.

It is a well-known fact that Japanese people tend to have long working hours. They go to the extra mile to deliver the perfect results. This drama shares how a female doctor by the name of Daimon Michiko who works tirelessly for the hospital.

This drama higlights things such as monetary gifts given to doctors, and even promotion of under-performing doctors. The main point of the drama is that needy patients are not being well attended to as they are not capable of giving monetary gifts under the table.

Its finally happening – Tsukihime Remake

Wednesday, February 10, 2021 / No Comments

Hello everyone, it has been awhile. Hope everyone is doing great and wishing all a Happy Chinese New Year.

Yes, you read the title right. There is great reason to celebrate for Type-Moon fans. Tears were shed when Type-Moon released the trailer for the Tsukihime remake, Tsukihime – A piece of blue glass moon, on 31 Dec 2020. After waiting for what seemed like an eternity, prayers were finally answered.

A brief overview of Tsukihime for those unfamiliar. Tsukihime is a visual novel written by Kinoko Nasu and developed by the game company, Type-Moon, way back in the year 2000. Type-Moon found much success with Tsukihime back then but quickly became overshadowed by the release of Fate/stay night in 2004 which was also developed by them. Fate/stay night is another visual novel and brainchild of Nasu which would quickly propel him into one of the most prominent visual novelists in Japan.

Being a huge fan of type-moon, I had to give Tsukihime a try and first played the visual novel back in 2014. Tsukihime (2000) had an amazing storyline but was admittedly held back by its outdated art and visuals. A remake was announced by Type-Moon in 2008 but would only come to materialize 13 years later, in Q3 of 2021 for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in Japan. As for the reason of the significant delay, fans could only speculate but it was likely due to Nasu being occupied by other projects related to the Fate series such as Fate/Grand Order.

Would I recommend you to try playing the Tsukihime remake? Yes, I would. If you enjoy an intriguing storyline with what seems to be god-tier visuals, then you might want to consider playing the remake of this popular visual novel from the 2000s. However, do bear in mind that being a visual novel, the gameplay will be just reading texts for the most part and is definitely not for everyone. I have included the trailer released by Type-Moon above for Tsukihime – A piece of blue glass moon. The hype is real!

You can only imagine the pure joy felt by the fans, myself included, from the announcement and trailer of the Tsukihime remake. The wait is finally over. As Kotomine Kirei from Fate/Stay night would say “Yorokobe Shounen. Your wish will, at last, come true.”

Thanks for reading and once again, Happy Chinese New Year, Gong Xi Fa Cai! Do check out these lovely Moo Chan Chinese New Year Stickers if you haven’t already.

Myethos strikes again – Best figure of 2021? Feat. Hatsune Miku

Saturday, August 29, 2020 / No Comments

Hello readers and fellow figure collectors, hope you are all doing well. I have some incredibly exciting news to share today. The painted prototype of the figure which many collectors including myself have been eagerly waiting for has finally been completed.

She is none other than the lovely Vocaloid Hatsune Miku from the figure company Myethos. Myethos is one of my favourite figure companies and one that I whole heartedly recommend as they make really high quality figures as mentioned in my figure collecting guide here. I am happy for Myethos as this figure will certainly boost their recognition in the Figure Collecting Community although more people are already becoming aware of them. Miku is scheduled for release on June 2021. This article is my review on the figure based on the prototype pictures that were posted by the company yesterday.

Despite being a Chinese Figure Company that has to compete against the big name Japanese players such as Good Smile Company, Myethos has once again knocked this figure out of the park. Phenomenal, breath-taking and dazzling are some of the most apt descriptions of this figure. Let’s take a closer look at the detailing of Miku in some close up shots below.

That face. OH MY GOD!! That is perfection, literally. Myethos figures have some of the best details but this face sculpt and detailing on Miku are on another level, simply out of this world. Just the face alone is a 10/10. The whole face was sculpted immaculately, from the nose, mouth to the ears even. But what stood out to me the most were the eyes. Myethos nailed the eyes down flawlessly, just look at the intricate details such as the eyelashes and slight gloss paint finish on the upper portion of her eyes that is cleverly balanced out by the lower portion. This face sculpt of Miku easily blows the face sculpt of most figures from Japanese Figure Companies away. I am sure many collectors are thinking of displaying her without her fan accessory just because of how beautiful the face is.

Moving on, the hair sculpt was also well executed and the individual strands were meticulously sculpted as shown in the picture above. I feel that Myethos also chose one of the best possible color gradients for Miku’s hair as it stands out but is not too overpowering and melds well with the darker brown coloured base. Her hair also extends onto the base, just look at that flow, simply amazing. The eyebrows are also an important detail not to overlook as they blend with the face really well. There is also excellent detailing on the upper portion of her dress which are the intricate patterns that are only visible upon closer inspection.

Now let us take a closer look at her accessories. Right off the bat, we see that Miku comes with a hair accessory in the form of a pink flower. The pink flower hair accessory is quite small but easily noticeable because of the color contrast to Miku’s hair.

Miku also comes with a brooch attached to her dress. There is some detailing on her brooch but I would not say it is the most detailed as I have seen other figures with even more detailing on the accessories. However, I must say that Myethos chose a good-fitting color for the brooch as it does not take away all the attention from the figure. The fan accessory is a nice touch and the details of the swallows and branches are also magnificent as they add a lot of detail and depth to the figure. The ribbon end of the fan is also not to be overlooked.

Miku also has a flower bracelet that has some detailing on it but is hard to see unless up-close.

Miku’s nails are also painted!

Miku’s heels and laced ankle socks/stockings have also been sculpted perfectly. The detailing on them is superb and the color scheme is great once again.

Miku is undoubtedly beautiful but a large part of what makes this figure stand out so much is definitely the base. You seldom see such an elaborate base coming with most figures. Many figure companies these days use generic round and flat bases that often come in one color. Some collectors prefer generic bases as they take away less attention from the figure itself. I feel that a unique and well-designed base add so much more overall depth to the whole figure. Miku’s outfit and the base give the whole figure a very oriental aura. Take a look at how well the flowers on her base were sculpted above.

Miku, her accessories and the base all combine together to form an incredible unit and an amazing figure. The color combination of the respective parts of the figure all complement each other very well, creating one of the most eye-catching figures. It is still too early to say but in my opinion, this will be the best figure of 2021, at least for now. Overall, I rate this figure 11/10. She is just that good to be honest, a true masterpiece.

Although I am not a Miku Fan as I personally do not know much about her and have not listened to her songs, this figure is definitely a guaranteed pre-order for me. She is too gorgeous to skip out on and I am really excited to have her as my first Miku scale figure. Pre-orders will start on August 31st and end on October 31st according to Myethos’ Weibo. You can order this figure on Taobao like most Myethos figures but AmiAmi should have her up for sale on their site as well like with most Myethos figures. Going with AmiAmi is a safer bet as they do replacements or refunds if the figure arrives damaged while Taobao most likely wouldn’t.

I highly recommend pre-ordering this Miku figure if you like her because I can guarantee that she will be sold out within a short period or immediately upon release. She is one of the most talked about figures on MyFigureCollection and the demand for her is very high. Do note that Myethos has never done re-runs for their figures. If you miss out on this pre-order, chances are you will have to buy her from another seller but at an astronomical after-market price. Miku will make a lovely centrepiece to your collection for sure.

Thank you for reading and have a great day! Stay safe!

Kiss... Goodbye?

Saturday, August 15, 2020 / No Comments

Hello everyone! It's been a while, I hope all of you are keeping well amidst this crazy period~

Recently, I have heard news that the kissanime site will be down forever, and obviously, I couldn't believe it at first. But alas, when I went to check, it seems that the news has certainly proven to be true. :(

I'm sure for some, it might not be that much of an issue, considering how many anime titles are in Netflix right now, but for someone who has grown up under the likes and nostalgia of kissanime, kissmanga etc. it definitely made me a bit melancholic. I still remember my first anime binge on that website; it was Anohana

I remembered being curious at first--I only got into anime at a later part of my life (about 5 years ago) so kissanime was the go-to site to watch this. Over time, I grew accustomed to pressing the "next episode" button, and I would be able to watch the next episode quickly without any buffering issues. I would also look forward to hearing the iconic kissanime intro at the start of each video:

Ah, the memories :')

Over time, I gradually began to love watching anime, and even found my favourite anime and fandoms to be in. Most importantly, there were a lot of anime that I could only exclusively find on kissanime. (I'm sure there are other streaming sites, but kissanime was still a site that I find myself gravitating to)

Anyway, I guess just like the website, it's time to accept it and move on. And who knows, maybe they'll come back again sometime!

For now, we still have Netflix. Granted, they don't carry a lot of titles (at least for me, because most of the anime I watch are a bit more secluded (or just, a little less talked about)--e.g Nana, Princess Principal, Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu... And it goes on. And even some popular titles aren't there yet, at least for now.

Well, on the bright side, at least there's still plenty other good anime to stream and watch. Here are some of my favourites that I have binged on Netflix so far! I'm a little biased towards the slice-of-life/cute girls doing cute things genre, so if you like those type of anime too, maybe you'd like to check out some of these! Or if you already have, then that is nice!

Zombieland Saga

So many memes have come out from this anime, and it's amazing because it's a really fun-loving and entertaining anime. I mean... Zombies and idols?! It really doesn't get any better than that. Here's one of the rap battles they did which truly encapsulated the entire series.

Asobi Asobase

Another super fun anime~ I find myself cackling at the antics these girls share, and it's really just a light-hearted, comedic watch without much intensity of a storyline to follow through.

Carole & Tuesday

This anime is one of the most underrated anime I have seen. It might be a slow watch for some people as it goes through 24 episodes but the production quality and voice acting are amazing. The friendship between Carole and Tuesday is so wholesome, and well developed that it made it such a comfortable watch. Also, the music is amazing!

Little Witch Academia

Another long episodic anime. But one that is so wholesome and colourful that it makes you want to keep watching to follow on Akko's journey as an eager, wide-eyed witch student.

And another long episodic anime. I seem to have a knack for these type of animes huh? Shirobako is essentially an anime about making anime. I think that's the best selling point I can give out, haha. But well, we get to take a peek of what it's like to work in an anime industry, as we revolve around a few high school friends. Friendships and passion makes the dream work~

Violet Evergarden

One of the more popular animes out there on netflix. I'm sure we all know by now the beauty of KyoAni, and it is further reflected here in Violet Evergarden! Despite its beautiful production quality, the story isn't compromised because it is equally as engaging and heartfelt. A really beautiful anime that is worth all their praise is all I can say.

And now, a bit on the more... Grip-on-the-edge-of-your-seats anime.

Scum's Wish

This anime was such a wild ride. It's lethal, it's heartbreaking, but it's also so emotionally charged. There's something that just draws me to this anime, despite how many times I feel myself wanting to tear away at the screen for the dangerous decisions the characters make. But really, it's a nice watch.

The Tatami Galaxy

I was really happy when this anime came out on Netflix. When I first watched it on kissanime, it was quite an obscure anime because of its quirkiness, to the point I felt like I needed some level of intelligence to watch it. But it's definitely an interesting watch, and we learn some valuable life lessons too.

And yes... Kakegurui, our favourite anime about high school gambling which can go to the... Extremes. Looking forward to the third season!

Well, to conclude, although kissanime may be ending, I'm sure there's still resources out there to fuel our anime needs. Netflix is a good option, but hopefully you'll be able to find some of your favourites on there. And hopefully, I've managed to introduce or allow you to revisit some anime listed here!

Have a good day and stay safe everyone~
