Figure review: Fate/Extella Link Gilgamesh

Thursday, November 14, 2019 / No Comments
Hi everyone! It's been a long time since I've shared a figure of mine. Today's star is Gilgamesh from the super popular Fate series, and this is the version from Fate/Extella Link. As you all might have heard, this particular game entry is a hack-and-slash sort, so I was surprised that they chose this outfit and pose for him. However, there are visual novel aspects in the game, and his battle outfits have already been well-represented in the other games of the Fate franchise, so I am quite happy to be able to obtain a softer Gilgamesh.
One of the reasons why I wanted to get this particular figure is my love for tigers. They are my favourite animal and here Gilgamesh is hanging out with not just one but two adorable tiger cubs!
As you can see, Gilgamesh appears to be enjoying his time with them as well. This figure turned out to be smaller than I had expected, and I'm not very impressed in the facial detailing, particularly the eyes. While the flatness is expected as they are generally decals, the lack of highlights in his iris is quite unnerving.
Details-wise, there are some areas done better than others. While the hair detail is average, the folds on his clothing are sculpted and shaded nicely.
The tiger cubs are well-painted as well for such a small scale; although I found some of the markings messy, I did appreciate the individual strokes that helps mimic soft fluffy fur.

Another thing I like about this figure is that it doesn't require a base and looks good from every angle! Even from this "front" view, it looks like he's leaning against the wall in a relaxed manner.
Overall, I am quite satisfied with this figure as a fan of Gilgamesh and tigers! However, it is not very value for money as it was smaller than I had expected and the details were not very fine as well. If you prefer the "usual" Gilgamesh, there is a large selection of other versions to choose from.

Singapore Comic Con interview with Joey Spiotto

Singapore Comic Con interview with Joey Spiotto

Singapore Comic Con had the privilege to catch up with Joey Spiotto, author and illustrator for a short interview. Perhaps many will know him from children books such as “Attack! Boss! Cheat Code! A Gamer's Alphabet”, Firefly: Back from the Black” and “Alien next Door”.

Joey has created artwork for numerous clients including Lucasfilm, Marvel, Microsoft, Loot Crate, among many others. Joey is a regularly featured artist at the world-famous Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles where he’s had several solo exhibitions featuring his hit print series “Storytime” - where he turns some of our favourite movies, musicians, TV shows and video games into covers of children’s books from our youth.

Before becoming an independent artist, Joey worked as a concept artist in the film and video game industry on such titles as “The Polar Express” for Warner Bros. as well as “Dead Space” and “The Sims” franchises at Electronic Arts.

                                                                                                           Joey Spiotto and his son

We put together a summary on the casual interview between SGCC and Joey Spiotto.

Host: What inspires you? What drives you?

Joey: I am inspired by my family. I watch a lot of cartoons with my kids and even draw inspiration when my kid reacts to something.

Host: Tell us about your experience being on the concept art team for the Polar Express.

Joey: Being able to work with Warner Bros was a dream come true. I learnt a lot about film production and how to create concept art. It was a wonderful experience.

Host: What is your best takeaway from working in the Video Game and Film industry.

Joey: The biggest takeaway is teamwork - How to get along and work together towards a common goal.

Host: What is the meaning behind the moniker ‘Joebot’?

Joey: Well, my name is Joey and I love robots. So I brought them together and.. 'Joebot'.

Host: Are there stories you would like to share to inspire fans?

Joey: I started working with great companies such as Gallery 1988, 20th Century Fox and Titan Books. I also got involved with a lot of official art shows such as Avengers Art Show with Marvel and Disney. With Titan Books, they basically let me do whatever I want in this project called “Alien Next Door” which I absolutely love it!

Host: How has the change in pop culture affected you and your craft?

Joey: The pop culture landscape has changed quite a bit since the creation of the internet. The internet has brought so many wonderful things. And with social media, artists can share their artwork and get feedback from the audience.

Host: Any advice for artists of the younger generation?

Joey: This line requires a lot of hard work, time, focus and dedication.

Host: In three words, what is Singapore Comic Con to you?

Joey: Opportunity (for) New Inspiration.

Indeed, I agree that a lot of hard work, time and dedication is needed not just for one to survive, but to excel in the creative industry today. May I also add the word ‘sacrifice’. As Bruce Lee ever said I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but the one who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” Such is the sacrifice for one in order to hone and master a skill.

Stay connected to SGCC for his signing schedules at Singapore Comic Con 2019, happening from 7-8 December at Marina Bay Sands Halls A, B and C. Tickets are available for purchase now.

First glimpse – One Piece Pirate Warriors 4

Tuesday, October 1, 2019 / No Comments

Fans of the One Piece Pirate Warriors series get hyped up! The latest installment, One Piece Pirate Warriors 4, is set to be released in 2020. Luffy and crew are back on another exciting adventure, featuring a new cast of playable characters with similar gameplay to its predecessors along with some new changes which will be discussed.

Game: One Piece Pirate Warriors 4
Genre: Musou
Developers: Omega Force; Koei Tecmo
Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
To be released: 2020
Platforms: PS 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows

FAQ:
What are Musou games?
For those who have never played or are unaware of what exactly the term Musou means, it is basically a game genre. Musou games, developed by Omega Force and Koei Tecmo are actually just your typical Hack and Slash games. The gameplay is straightforward and simplistic, you complete missions and slash your way through a horde of cannon fodder. Completing missions usually by slaying enemy commanders allow you to advance to the next stage of the game. Koei’s Warriors franchise which includes Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors and Warriors Orochi are highly popular Musou games.

One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 first look

Wano Country Arc Trailer

Gameplay

General gameplay to give you some insight into Pirate Warriors
(First 12mins in English, the rest in Japanese but showcases Zoro, Kuzan and Ichiji)

One Piece Pirate Warriors is a Musou game with the story based on One Piece. This game requires plenty of button mashing during combat. Clear the missions given to you in order to progress the story and game. The story in Pirate Warriors 4 is based on the Whole Cake Island Arc in the manga. The Wano Country Arc is also available in the game but it is based on an original story written by the developers because the Wano Country Arc is still currently ongoing in the manga.

Movesets

By mashing a combination of buttons, you can use different moves on enemies. Be creative and adapt to the situation. For example, some moves are more optimal on a huge wave of enemies while others are better suited for obliterating single targets. A good tip will be to chain your movesets to unleash a combination attack in order to maximise your damage output per second.

Some of the characters movesets

Additional movesets on most returning characters have been added. Most notably, Luffy is now able to get into his Gear Fourth state which gives him new moves. Having a larger variety of moves means more combos and enjoyment. You are also able to use special attacks like the previous versions of the game as long as you charge the special attack gauge by damaging enemies.

Playable Characters

Here is the list of some of the known playable characters at the moment. Do note that you can expect the list to be longer than this but the full roster has not been announced. This list is subjected to change.

1. Monkey D. Luffy

2. Roronoa Zoro

3. Vinsmoke Sanji

4. Carrot

5. Kuzan

6. Sabo

7. Jinbei

8. Vinsmoke siblings

Front row (left to right): Reiju, Ichiji, Yonji, Niji

Notable changes

One significant change in Pirate Warriors 4 compared to Pirate Warriors 3 is the ability for your characters to jump. This is a very crucial change because it opens up the possibility of aerial combat. You are able to use your moves in mid-air by jumping and this might grant you invincibility against non-aerial enemy units. Pirate Warriors 3 also had aerial combat for very few characters such as Marco (phoenix form) and Kizaru. In Pirate Warriors 3, I vividly remember that the cannon fodders were not able to damage Marco and Kizaru while they were in mid-air. Now that all characters can jump in Pirate Warriors 4, you can imagine the limitless potential that you can take advantage of.

Additional movesets for returning characters is also a notable change in Pirate Warriors 4 which had been mentioned above earlier in the movesets section.

Luffy vs Titan Big Mom and Titan X Drake

Titan Mode has been added in Pirate Warriors 4. When Titan Mode is active, enemies become larger in size and deal more damage as well. This requires you to plan your moves strategically and poses a greater level of difficulty, making the game much more challenging. The difficulty levels of Pirate Warriors 4 has not been announced yet but if it follows Pirate Warriors 3, then the highest difficulty setting should be “Super Hard”. There is nightmare log in Pirate Warriors 3 where the enemies are powered up to the point where you can easily get defeated. My guess is that Titan Mode in Pirate Warriors 4 is the equivalent of nightmare log but there may be a possibility that nightmare log will return to pose as a challenge to players again.

Final Notes

The information available on One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 is still limited and there may be changes in the game content when it is released in 2020. This article is written with the aim of providing a first look at the game. Pirate Warriors 4 seems promising already and I believe it will be a phenomenal game that fans of One Piece can look forward to.

Japanese reality TV shows: more addictive than sugar

Sunday, September 22, 2019 / No Comments
In the last few years, Netflix has introduced us to Japanese reality TV. And we gobble. it. up. I grew up watching reality TV like The Real World and Jersey Shore (don't judge me). I still love these shows to be honest, I love drama. Unlike these shows, Japanese reality TV shows aren't all 'out there' in the drama department. The fights are way more subtle, the yelling and physicality is much less. So when it does occurs, it leaves audiences shocked. As desensitised as I have gotten to fights and yelling and hurling insults to one and another watching Western reality TV shows, I did not really expect this Japanese slow-paced-quiet-life to be this addictive. The quiet, soft, between the lines kind of conflict that was happening on my screen had me GLUED onto the screen. Let me walk you through some of the shows I have been binging and waiting for new seasons to come out, like a dog waiting for its owner to return home after a long, long day.

Terrace House

First of all, who doesn't know about Terrace House nowadays? The Japanese reality TV show similar to other Reality TV like Big Brother, The Real World, or Jersey Shore, an unscripted show where 6 strangers live together whom are carefully cherrypicked models or mixed so there are never ugly people in the house. Three women and three men where the women and men sleep separately in two different rooms and live in houses I could only dream of living in. So we basically just follow their lives, and they may or may not fall in love with each other.

Oh maaan, I wish I was young and pretty so I could join this show.

I started watching Terrace house from Terrace House: Boys & Girls in the City, because this is the one that Netflix started showing. This stuff was like, what's going on. Is there even anything happening on my screen? And then quickly escalated to OH MY GOD did you see what -insert super subtle movement of someone- did? And how -insert very subtle and normal toned comment of the other person- reacted?? I CAN'T BELIEVE IT. Most people would go like, whut. There's nothing going on, they're just talking. But to some people who know the Japanese culture a bit better, some of these 'normal conversations' are full-blown conflicts. And when they DO have actual conflicts that are more obvious, shit has hit the fan and splattered on everyone in the room already. Enjoy that mental image.
If looks could kill.

Tears will flow: from people leaving the house kind of sadness to getting dumped.

I am such a fan-girl I even went to Karuizawa last April and took a picture in front of the house.

Fangirling SO hard, I NEEDED to go to Sasa (Tsubasa's dad's soba place) and try the soba there! I even saw him work there.

The interior was very (old-style) Japanese.

The soba was actually quite nice!

They just made me hungry man.. Every date you have, every bite you eat, I'll be watching you. Am I sounding creepy yet?

Currently I have just finished Part 1 of Terrace House: Tokyo 2019-2020. I wonder if the Olympics are going to be a big part of this next year! Will there be anyone that will compete in the Olympics joining the house? Won't they be too busy training? All these questions!

Ainori (Love Wagon)

Less well-known, Ainori (Love Wagon) is a dating show taking four guys and three girls on a trip in a van throughout the world. During this time they get to know each other and if they like someone they can get a 'ticket' from the Love Wagon driver to go home together. Then they confess to the person they like and ask if they want to go back to Japan together (and continue their relationship). The next day the person that was confessed to gives her/his answer and either continue on Ainori or go home together. This show started in 1999 and was already popular in Japan, it was even picked up in Vietnam with their own version! Some of the couples even got married and have kids now. Netflix took it internationally and we are glad they did!

The newer season started in South-East Asia and during season two we got all the way to Central Asia. This newer version of Ainori includes some colourful characters to say the least..

Depparin is a young lady from Fukuoka (shout out to Fukuoka where I studied!) with a very ... colourful character. She is not your standard nod and smile type of girl. She will state her opinion and fight you for it. This woman stole my heart in season 1. Whenever she gets angry, her Hakata dialect comes out in full force. I enjoyed this the most honestly, she made the drama but some of it was fair. You can feel how she challenges the stifling side of Japanese culture by calling the others out when they stick to the rules a bit too strictly. This straight forward woman who dropped out of school challenges the restrictive Japanese standards in this show.

SPOILER

In season 2, it felt a bit like they were milking her enormous popularity.

Oh oh, Shyboy.. How I love you so. You are not shy at all, singing in front of a radio audience like that with your own songs. Doing what you like. You are the most adorable, sweetest virgin boy out there. And boy, DID they focus on him never having even kissed a girl before. I think they just chose him to be a funny character on the show. Who would have thought the audience would be rooting the hardest for this underdog, this man that follows his heart and stays true to his ideals even though so many people might have mocked him up until now.

Never scared of showing your emotions. You precious, precious man.

How they show which character is interested in whom. Depparin's arrows were always all over the place, this girl liked a guy within 10 seconds! And then changed her mind in the next 10 secs.

Some of the characters are very memorable on this show. Some are not memorable, but as time passes we get to know them better and they touch our hearts as well. I definitely had to wipe away a tear here and there, tears of sadness as well as pure joy.

These two made me bawl my eyes out.

Oh man, the most tense confession in season 1 imho.

I love this show, and a new season is out now! Can't wait to binge Ainori: African Journey soon! I first need to wait for the whole season to come out. Patience, where art thou..

The Bachelor Japan

Pretty well known over the world, The Bachelor is about a group of women competing for one guy (usually rich or something). I never watched this show before, and I started with season 3 of the Japanese version. This bachelor is a 31 year old dentist who likes fancy cars and golf (talk about stereotypical rich men..). All these golddiggers women compete to be the one he proposes to in the end. This guy is serious, he has a specially made ring ready and everything, boi's not playing around.

I feel like the show is making fun of itself with this one though. It's really milking this rivalry between women and bitchiness thing.

These are the main Japanese reality shows I am addicted to now, any others I should watch? Leave your recommendations in the comments! Please do tho, I don't have a life. I need this as life-support, for real.

Studio commentators: ode to Yama-chan

What I really like about these Japanese reality shows is that they have commentators. Usually a panel of commentators consisting of singers, comedians, actors and etc (aka famous people) sit and discuss what's going on in each show. Usually they start with what happened last time, and then halfway through discuss what had happened up until then, and in the end somewhere another reaction moment. I love how we can have a breather to digest what has happened and to discuss what could happen. It's kind of anthropological research in a way.

These are the core commentators except for the guy 2nd from the right. There is one young actor like him which changed up until now, but the last few seasons the actor stayed the same.

 Sometimes they even have guests.

The commentators from Ainori, which except for Becky has changed a lot as well. I didn't start African Journey, it hasn't come to SG yet but we watch it with VPN anyway so amirite?

The Bachelor Japan commentators: I like the lady on the right. She was a former AKB48 from what I heard (correct me if I'm wrong) but unlike the 'pristine' image of that group, this lady is haaarsh and we love it of course.

My favourite commentator of all, is Yama-chan from Terrace House. Ryota Yamasato is a comedian who gives the sharpest and funniest comebacks. I love how he has no filter, at all. He thrives off the chaos and drama. Like me! Every time I watch an episode with my friends, I make a comment about something that happens. And then during the commenting he says the EXACT SAME THING. Too bad he's already married, totes soulmate material heh.

All in all, I love that we get a glimpse into these Japanese people's lives. It's a tad bit very voyeuristic, but hey, I don't have a life. And it is so, so entertaining. Well then, let's open up another bag of chips and the next episode is in 5... 4... 3... 2...1...
