Welcoming a New Season

One joke we have in Singapore is that there are three seasons: hot, hotter, hottest. Unless there is a superlative beyond hottest, I think it's safe to say there won't be another season here any time soon. So what am I talking about? Well… I'm talking about the new anime season!

Next month, summer anime will take the stage. Spring anime has begun wrapping up. It's been a great season, with several anime I've been anticipating showing such as season 2 of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Fairy Tail (who wouldn't, after waiting an entire year), Haikyuu and Mekakucity Actors. Of course, there are so many different series each season, it would be a full-time job to watch all of them, so I usually let other series not on my immediate watch list to run a little first. After they've ended, I'll probably spend an entire weekend marathoning through them. Am I the only one that does this? I know there are people who cannot stand not knowing what happens, or are worried that by waiting so long they'll be exposed to spoilers before they can watch the new episodes. For me, I actually like spoilers. I'm the sort who would read the detailed synopsis of a movie before deciding if I should watch it.

Back to summer anime, I'm sure you've all read the article about Free! Eternal Summer. Yup, that's one series I'll be watching weekly. I'm pretty excited about the new character! I've heard theories about how he is the Makoto to Rin's Haru, but I'll be waiting with no expectations. That said, here is the second trailer for Free! Eternal Summer!

Looks good doesn't it! Enough rambling, here are my top anime picks for summer!

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon: Crystal

It would be impossible for me to not include Sailor Moon in this list! I've watched Sailor Moon as a kid and as a teen, compiled the manga to read and reread. This reboot was delayed more than once, leaving my heart more fragile each time. I'm thrilled that it is finally going to air! From what I know, it will begin right from the start, following the original story closely! As you've seen from the trailer, the art has shifted from old-fashioned shoujo style to modern shoujo style. Right now, I'm not feeling the new art, but the trailer provides us with only the bare minimum, so I'm expecting to be wowed by the first episode.

DRAMAtical Murder

First developed as a Boys Love visual novel, it's now given an anime of its own! I have to admit, my knowledge of DMMD is limited as I do not play games, but what I did read about it piqued my interest, especially since its genre is good ol' science fiction. It seems that the anime will most probably not focus on the BL aspect, which I am glad for, as the premise of the plot is quite intriguing and I would prefer it to not be disturbed by any, ah, salacious scenes.

Glasslip

This anime seems like a light and easy one. There is not much information about it other that this:
"The story follows six high school students who meet during the summer. The protagonist is Touko Fukami, a 17-year-old born in Fukui Prefecture. Her dream is to become a glass artisan."
Seems pretty slice-of-life to me! A good deviation from the more action-packed selections on this list.

Kuroshitsuji: Book of Circus

I'm really excited about this adaption, firstly because Daisuke Ono is voicing Sebastian again, and secondly because it picks up one of the most colourful arcs in the manga. I definitely cannot wait to see the circus characters animated! This arc also reveals more about Ciel's past and the rest of the mainstay secondary characters (his household staff). Well, I should stop before I spoil it for you!

Persona 4: The Golden Animation

This is the second adaptation of Persona 4: Golden, the video game, the first one being Persona 4: The Animation. I did not show particular interest in the first anime, but due to the overwhelming excitement for the second one, I think this deserves a spot on this list. Also, the setting captured me: unexplained murders. Ah~ I have a huge penchant for mystery, whether anime, manga or books.

Psycho-Pass New Edit Version

This version basically takes the first series and recuts them into one-hour episodes with new footage. I loved the first series. Simply put, it's quite a tough series. The characters are vulnerable and it can be sobering watching this. Despite that, I cannot wait for this season to air. I also have to share with you this:

The complete first season in Premium Edition Bluray!!! I'm in love with the colour scheme! Beautiful packaging indeed!

Space☆Dandy 2

What can I say? It's funny and it's flashy. It's basically the type of frivolous pitfall that would trap me - and I wouldn't mind not leaving.

Sword Art Online II

That the first season was good enough to get my friend (who has never watched anime his entire life) to complete it in one sitting (that's 25 episodes, basically an entire day!) should be enough of a reason for season 2 to be looked forward to.

Tokyo Ghoul

I greatly enjoyed this manga and its art (especially the masks!), so I'm seriously looking forward to the anime! It actually reminds me a little of Deadman Wonderland. However, I have a dilemma as this is the sort of series that I would prefer to wait out and enjoy completely at one go, yet I would like to watch it as soon as it airs…

Of course, each season also brings along new films, and the one I am most excited about is Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Border 3. Firstly, I am very partial to seinen manga/anime and secondly, its cyberpunk/post-cyberpunk aesthetic somehow really appeals to me. Now, it's called Border 3 because it is the third in a four-part OVA series. I have recently started reading the manga and I like it very much. Hopefully I'll get around to watching the other OVAs soon before this one is available! Here is the trailer:

What anime are you looking forward to this summer?
