Visiting SpookyTown "The Lost Carnival" by KidZania

Saturday, November 10, 2018 / No Comments
On 3 November we visited SpookyTown "The Lost Carnival" by KidZania. Word has it that many years ago, there was a mysterious explosion caused by the town’s famous alchemist, Dr SpookZ in SpookyTown’s annual Carnival. Everyone in the once-bustling town vanished except SpookyTown’s Mayor Fabiola. And if you step into SpookyTown and listen attentively, you can still hear carnival music from The Lost Carnival. Indeed this is enough to make my hair stand as I recalled a similar incident when I was doing my NS duty patrolling late at night. In a deserted section of the reservist camp, I heard what sounded like an old Japanese World War II music. I didn't stay to investigate. There were only less than 50 soldiers in the entire camp and it wasn't a good idea to ask for help if I was captured or worst, if I got time-travelled back to the 1940s!

Our lovely media assistant cum photographer was super excited to visit SpookyTown to soak into the Halloween spirit.

Beautiful stage for the little boys and ghouls to take photos.

SpookyTown is a 81,000 square feet kid-sized city, complete with buildings and paved streets. The white mist provided a mysterious air to the atmosphere. In this corner, there was an abandoned ambulance. It seemed there was a zombie outbreak.

As we walked further, the mood became lively with the presence of happy kids and adults. Stepping into the Carnival Games zone, the kids were queuing up for their turn to play some games and win prizes.

Angela gave out some cute Halloween stickers to some of the children. We then queued up to enter the "Rehabilitation Centre", which was one of the Haunted House.

As we entered the Rehabilitation Centre, we were briefed that there were three parts to the journey. Firstly, we had to find the cure for the citizens of SpookyTown or else well, we would join the hordes of creatures outside. Second, the medical staff attending to the patient would ask if we had found the magic cure. Finally, we got to witness how effective the magic cure was.

This was the first room and it reminded me of the chemistry lesson in my secondary days. Only creepier as the room was pretty dim. I was prepared any moment the medical lab technician would yelled at us. Luckily she didn't as there were kids in the room.

Loud banging on the wooden wall....

As we approached the next room, the setting was that of a hospital ward. The doctor was trying to treat the male patient whom was fighting for his life. And I was prepared to fight for mine as well, that is, if he came near me...

We got a little relieved as we entered to the last rehabilitation room. Mankind had found a cure which was purple in colour and the girl patient was being treated and monitored. From time to time, the patient would look into her small mirror and smile in a creepy manner. She would also stand up and walk towards us which freaked some of the smaller kids. Overall, the scare actor and actresses did a wonderful job in the "Rehabilitation Room", balancing being professional and making us feel comfortable.

Next, we ventured towards the "Forgotten Garden".

The staff inside the room were preparing the little "pond" for the next batch of kids to do some fishing. The kids must find the missing "Words" to help reverse the curse that had befallen SpookyTown's resident farmer.

In KidZania, there are a few F&B outlets for a little stopover.

Stepping into KidZania's SpookyTown made us feel that we are in other parts of the world. The climate was cool and comfortable to just roam about.

If modern technology such as Google Map fails you, we could fall back to the good old traditional map.

We then proceeded to the second floor to visit the "House of Antiques".

All shoes outside...

The "House of Antiques" was the designated Safe Zone for the little boys and ghouls to take part on drawing, colouring and balloon sculpting, whilst keeping them calm from the Halloween activities going down below. What a thoughtful idea from KidZania!

Behind Angela was a large poster of our creation, Kakichan "Spookalicious 3" Halloween theme illustration. We placed a black-and-white version of Spookalicious 3 for the children to colour, along with some Kakichan stickers. Kakichan was very well received throughout this Halloween season.

Angela loved the cool indoor climate. While she was taking a rest and made herself comfortable, I revisited the ground floor to snap more pictures.

I took a photo with a zombie guy holding a ragged doll whom seemed to be more scared of me ^^.

The "Best Dressed" for the night went to this team of suicide squad Harley Quinn. Kudos ><.
We spent about 3 hours touring SpookyTown and it was a very enjoyable experience. The queue were not long, averaging about 20-30 mins. It was evident that the venue wasn't packed to the brim even though KidZania could easily sold more tickets. But that would had made people wait longer in the queue, inadvertently reducing the quality (and experience). In today's climate where on a moral level, we often ask ourselves "To Do Things Right" or "To Do the Right Thing"? KidZania had impressed me by opting for the latter, forgoing business over quality.

Figure Unboxing and Review: Kousaka Honoka ImaBoku ver. (Good Smile Company)

Monday, November 5, 2018 / No Comments
This is one of the first figures for Love Live, featuring Kousaka Honoka in the stage outfit of Season 1's opening theme: Bokura wa Ima no Naka de. This figure drew a lot of negative comments due to the huge tilt in her pose, which caused worry for possible tilting in the future, as well as from fans of the other eight members who were unhappy that their favorite member would not get the same figure treatment.
Quite frankly, one would think that they have gotten a steal for this figure as I found her unopened at around 4,000 yen. However, unfortunately, even the box itself looks and feels quite compact and cheap. The back of the box features the figure's back view, but at the same time, also fleshes out how tilted the figure is. Honoka looks like she is about to fall over!
This problem seems to be gone when you see her in the plastic blister, but it quickly resurfaces when you attach her to the base as the two connect at an angle.
The base is plain and has light pink lines running across it. Definitely not too much to inspire or see here. It can certainly offer a lot more, even with something as simple as adding in her name or the title of the series in a font that stands out more.

What is good about this base would be how compact it is. It does serve the purpose of anchoring the figure well, and when mixed with its small size, makes it incredibly easy to fit Honoka into displays.
The peg is a small white plastic peg that does its job amazingly well. While the base is plain, it is debatable that there are some nice touches to it. First, there are two shades of pink: a lighter pink for the stripes, and a darker pink when the stripes cross each other.

At this angle, you would be able to see 'Honoka Kousaka' written in white font on the base. I do wish that it was in a darker pink instead so the font can pop better.
With Honoka out of the box and placed onto the base, we can now take a simple 360 of her to see how the figure looks from different angles. Fortunately, she still appears quite presentable from the front!
Her hair color is a lot more saturated on the figure than in the illustration on the box, so that's a minus for me. Her pose is quite Honoka-esque and you can sense her liveliness emanating from the figure itself!
I especially like the ruffles down her shirt and around her arm.
In Love Live, there is typically three different styles per outfit, with three girls in each style, and I'm really glad that they gave Honoka this particular one as I find that it suits her the best!
From the back, you can see that Honoka's hair is nearly the shade of ginger and more close to blonde than brown. This is the natural color and shade that the figure came with, and is by no means due to sun damage. Likewise, the tilted slant of her pose closely resembles the original, and is not from any tilting or damages due to weight distribution.
Changing Honoka's angle slightly rectifies the visual aspect of the tilting issue and we can now concentrate on how puffy her red skirt is.

The black parts are slightly translucent too and that really adds an extra touch of color, texture, and dimension to the figure.
The suspenders crossing at the small of her back are also lifted off her shirt to illustrate the tug of the material. This adds a slight bit of realism which I always appreciate in a figure.
However, what isn't realistic to me is how her hair is sculpted. There is too much one-directional movement in her ponytail, suggesting that Honoka just made a huge movement, however, the same amount of movement are not seen in the sculpt for the rest of her hair and clothes.
Strangely, despite that, GSC seems to have paid quite a bit of attention to the yellow ribbon on her chest, making it puffy and giving it nice creases. The paintwork is impeccable and all the stripes are painted on cleanly with no paint leaks.

GSC also took the time to make her hands really detailed, especially her outstretched hand, which had quite a bit of shading in addition to the realistic sculpt. The heart cutout on the back of her hand is precise for both shading and sculpting too. While I appreciate the efforts here, it might be more appropriate to divert this attention to the other aspects of the figure so as to balance things out.

And last but not the least, Honoka comes with knee socks which end with a red ribbon lining. The stockings are in opaque matte grey that is a very different shade and texture compared to the glossy two-toned color used for her black boots.

Halloween 2018 "Spookalicious 3" with Kakichan The Oyster

Saturday, October 20, 2018 / No Comments
October is my favorite month of the year as it is the season of the creepy crawlies or what some local people called the "English Ghost" month. The culture is so westernized that it takes a bit of time for people to embrace and celebrate, particularly the business owners whom are Chinese. I'm a Chinese but I'm super fond of Halloween, ever since I was intoxicated by the thrills and the spectacle of Horror Nights and Spooktacular since 2010.

I have my own version of Halloween in the form of illustration. Let's call it "Spookalicious" and it's the 3rd edition this year. You can find in here the previous "Spookalicious 1" and "Spookalicious 2". But first, here are some throwback photos of Sentosa Spooktacular which took place in October 2012.

Angela and myself at the entrance of Sentosa Spooktacular.

We had to pass by a cemetery filled by blue gas-emitting graveyards (They are partly to be blamed for global warming, not just humans).

While queuing, we saw a hanging body (hopefully that thing isn't alive). Of all the ghosts and ghouls in the world, what creeps me the most is a Chinese woman in plain white clothes and long hair. Nothing scares the shit out of me compared to a lifeless Chinese lady ghost. What about you? Anyway, the atmosphere was eerie, saved from the many human bodies around to keep one another warm.

I took a photo with what seemed to be a mummy-zombie. Poor half-dead was beated up badly by humans with batons and melees. He could barely stand straight. Hats-off to these scare artists! They are there to entertain us, trying hard not to smile or laugh in the midst of doing so. I saw people got frightened and in their reflexes, punched these artists. Please control your emotions. Yes, offer to take welfies with them, they are just like cosplayers in ghoul form.

So back to Spookalicious 3 which I was talking about.
I made a Kakichan the Oyster rendition wallpaper and here's the sketch.
From the bottom left to right, Kakichan as Chinese Buns (and seller), The Mummy, The Sleeping Pirate, The Floating Ghost, The Count Dracula and finally Kakichan as the Bee-Bat. In October every year, Amami Kisa's (Queen Bee) blue bee wings is transformed into bat wings and Kakichan takes this character.

I drew some pictures outside for our illustrator Shirielise to better understand and render into digital artwork.

The digital outline of Spookalicious 3.

The completed coloured versions done by our illustrator Shirielise.

So what's with the Chinese Buns? The idea was from this...

Isn't that cute? I hope it wasn't too hot inside and there are rotating shifts. Luckily she didn't snap and chew my finger off?

Hope you like those wallpapers. Do download and save to your computer to spice up the Halloween mood. Also the black-and-white digital outline can be printed out and pass to your kids for colouring. I find A5 size to be the most appropriate size for colouring. ^^

Happy Halloween.
