Kiss... Goodbye?

Saturday, August 15, 2020 / No Comments

Hello everyone! It's been a while, I hope all of you are keeping well amidst this crazy period~

Recently, I have heard news that the kissanime site will be down forever, and obviously, I couldn't believe it at first. But alas, when I went to check, it seems that the news has certainly proven to be true. :(

I'm sure for some, it might not be that much of an issue, considering how many anime titles are in Netflix right now, but for someone who has grown up under the likes and nostalgia of kissanime, kissmanga etc. it definitely made me a bit melancholic. I still remember my first anime binge on that website; it was Anohana

I remembered being curious at first--I only got into anime at a later part of my life (about 5 years ago) so kissanime was the go-to site to watch this. Over time, I grew accustomed to pressing the "next episode" button, and I would be able to watch the next episode quickly without any buffering issues. I would also look forward to hearing the iconic kissanime intro at the start of each video:

Ah, the memories :')

Over time, I gradually began to love watching anime, and even found my favourite anime and fandoms to be in. Most importantly, there were a lot of anime that I could only exclusively find on kissanime. (I'm sure there are other streaming sites, but kissanime was still a site that I find myself gravitating to)

Anyway, I guess just like the website, it's time to accept it and move on. And who knows, maybe they'll come back again sometime!

For now, we still have Netflix. Granted, they don't carry a lot of titles (at least for me, because most of the anime I watch are a bit more secluded (or just, a little less talked about)--e.g Nana, Princess Principal, Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu... And it goes on. And even some popular titles aren't there yet, at least for now.

Well, on the bright side, at least there's still plenty other good anime to stream and watch. Here are some of my favourites that I have binged on Netflix so far! I'm a little biased towards the slice-of-life/cute girls doing cute things genre, so if you like those type of anime too, maybe you'd like to check out some of these! Or if you already have, then that is nice!

Zombieland Saga

So many memes have come out from this anime, and it's amazing because it's a really fun-loving and entertaining anime. I mean... Zombies and idols?! It really doesn't get any better than that. Here's one of the rap battles they did which truly encapsulated the entire series.

Asobi Asobase

Another super fun anime~ I find myself cackling at the antics these girls share, and it's really just a light-hearted, comedic watch without much intensity of a storyline to follow through.

Carole & Tuesday

This anime is one of the most underrated anime I have seen. It might be a slow watch for some people as it goes through 24 episodes but the production quality and voice acting are amazing. The friendship between Carole and Tuesday is so wholesome, and well developed that it made it such a comfortable watch. Also, the music is amazing!

Little Witch Academia

Another long episodic anime. But one that is so wholesome and colourful that it makes you want to keep watching to follow on Akko's journey as an eager, wide-eyed witch student.

Shirobako

And another long episodic anime. I seem to have a knack for these type of animes huh? Shirobako is essentially an anime about making anime. I think that's the best selling point I can give out, haha. But well, we get to take a peek of what it's like to work in an anime industry, as we revolve around a few high school friends. Friendships and passion makes the dream work~

Violet Evergarden

One of the more popular animes out there on netflix. I'm sure we all know by now the beauty of KyoAni, and it is further reflected here in Violet Evergarden! Despite its beautiful production quality, the story isn't compromised because it is equally as engaging and heartfelt. A really beautiful anime that is worth all their praise is all I can say.

And now, a bit on the more... Grip-on-the-edge-of-your-seats anime.

Scum's Wish

This anime was such a wild ride. It's lethal, it's heartbreaking, but it's also so emotionally charged. There's something that just draws me to this anime, despite how many times I feel myself wanting to tear away at the screen for the dangerous decisions the characters make. But really, it's a nice watch.

The Tatami Galaxy

I was really happy when this anime came out on Netflix. When I first watched it on kissanime, it was quite an obscure anime because of its quirkiness, to the point I felt like I needed some level of intelligence to watch it. But it's definitely an interesting watch, and we learn some valuable life lessons too.

Kakegurui

And yes... Kakegurui, our favourite anime about high school gambling which can go to the... Extremes. Looking forward to the third season!

Well, to conclude, although kissanime may be ending, I'm sure there's still resources out there to fuel our anime needs. Netflix is a good option, but hopefully you'll be able to find some of your favourites on there. And hopefully, I've managed to introduce or allow you to revisit some anime listed here!

Have a good day and stay safe everyone~

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: A Celebration of Humanity

Sunday, August 2, 2020 / No Comments

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

My mum and I always had a tradition of watching anime together ever since I was a little kid. And because of the COVID-19 situation, both of us had been relegated to staying at home for ungodly amounts of time since, as far as possible, telecommuting has become the norm, and I had three months of summer break before my next semester of school started. So we thought, in the midst of a global pandemic, what better than to start (and complete) a new anime series?

A quick scroll through MyAnimeList found Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood to be the top rated anime of all time, standing at a solid score of 9.23/10 above other classics like Stein’s Gate, Hunter x Hunter and Gintama, which generally averaged around 9.12. Of course, I knew that ratings were subjective and tried not to pay them more heed than necessary, but the fact that I’ve so often heard of the masterpiece that is FMAB and to see it unanimously agreed upon to be the best anime/manga of all time no doubt caught my attention very much. So it was decided, that that would be the next show we would watch.

I know I’m late to the show (literally), but FMAB it is undoubtedly one of the most complex shounen series I’ve watched. In essence, alchemy is, as the narrator frequently reiterates, the science of understanding, deconstructing, and reconstructing matter. However, it is not an all-powerful art. It is impossible to create something out of nothing. If one wishes to obtain something, something of equal value must be given. This is the law of equivalent exchange; the basis of all alchemy.”

Simply put, alchemy involves the manipulation of natural and man-made resources, such as water, fire, ice or metal, and many more. It’s a similar concept to elemental bending in the well-known Nickelodeon series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, except that it veers more in the direction of science and modernity.

Edward transmuting his metal arm

Roy Mustang basically fire-bending

At this point, one might think that alchemists are overly-powerful, given that there seem to be almost no limits to what alchemy can achieve. That would almost be true, if not for the great forbidden taboo amongst alchemists, which is human transmutation. In short, the only thing that alchemy cannot create is human life, because nothing of an equal value can be exchanged for the gift of life. That is exactly the taboo that the main characters, two brothers named Edward and Alphonse Elric, commit as they engage in a naïve attempt at human transmutation as children to bring their dead mother back to life. Not only does it fail terribly, Alphonse loses his entire body and is relegated to using a suit of armour as temporary vessel for his soul, while Edward loses both an arm and leg that has to be replaced by “automail”, the show’s term for prosthetics. The rest of the story revolves around their journey to get their bodies back, no matter the cost.

Alphonse loses his body

Ed loses his leg

The Elric brothers' new forms

Yet, despite the supposed emphasis on alchemy, the show slowly but surely makes clear that power derived from alchemy cannot be the main goal of the characters. The real beauty of the show lies in its ability to encapsulate both the humorous and uplifting traits of a shounen anime, while delving into complex issues of the human condition that have plagued humanity since the beginning of time, such as the value of life and the strength of human conviction and familial love. These are the lessons and experiences that the main antagonist fails to grasp in his self-serving and devastating pursuit of power at the cost of great destruction. The main antagonist, referred to as Father, is one of many homunculi in the series, artificial human forms created through alchemy. Arrogant and prideful to the point of playing god, he craves divine power over the world and sees himself as unquestionably superior to the entire human race, who become nothing but pawns to him in his quest for power. He also spawns seven other homunculi from himself, which are named after the seven deadly sins: Lust, Greed, Pride, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Gluttony.

Father and the Seven Deadly Sins

But what sealed the deal for me was no doubt the ending of the show. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been emotionally invested in an anime only for it to have ended too abruptly (or lazily). FMAB, thankfully, did no such thing and in fact, managed to conclude on both an unexpected, yet completely believable and extremely heart-warming note. While the brothers start off the anime vehemently believing that only alchemy will get them their bodies back, to the point of obsession, they mature considerably throughout the series and demonstrate impeccable character growth by the end, understanding that alchemy is not the all-powerful and infallible art form they once thought it was. In the end, the answer is simple: Edward gives up his alchemy in exchange for getting his brother’s body back as he finally comes to the conclusion that he does not need alchemy to be truly happy – what’s most important are the relationships he forged along the way with his brother, his friends and his many mentors.

Ultimately, both Father and the Elric sought the truth; the difference was that while the Elric brothers had to undergo the inescapable trials and tribulations of life and learn from their failures with the help of the people who cared for them and loved them, Father sought the easy way out, opting for power and allowing his hubris to get in the way of experiencing the variety of life.

Father fails to see the truth and dies

Ed gives up his alchemy for Al

Al gets his body back

The brothers are back

The experience of FMAB cannot be possibly encapsulated within a single blog post, but I hope that I’ve sufficiently interested you in the show. FMAB is a wonderful testimony to the strength of humanity even in the most of trying of times, and is that not apt in the current reality that we live in right now? We can’t say we’ve truly lived life if we haven’t experienced both the good and the bad. Although times may seem bleak, let’s try our best to take things in our stride and overcome whatever life throws at us!

Thanks for reading and take care everybody!

Kaguya-sama: Love is War Anime Review

Thursday, July 30, 2020 / No Comments
During the circuit breaker period, I started feeling bored out my mind, so I thought I should probably start watching a light-hearted, comedy anime to feel better. My friend recommended Kaguya-sama: Love is War to me, mentioning that it made her laugh on multiple occasions, so I decided to give it a shot.

It immediately reminded me of The Disastrous Life of Saiki K, where the episodes were short, standalone skits featuring the main characters. It was immediately very dramatic, the way Shinomiya and Shirogane calculated their every move in order to avoid embarrassing situations that would expose them as being interested in each other.

Shinomiya scheming and plotting against Shirogane

From small things like what kind of birthday present to get for each other, to simply following each other online, the anime heavily dramatizes how each small action they take would lead to the other finding out about their crush.

Shinomiya contemplating the very small decision of whether or not to go to the movies with Shorigane as if her life depended on it

The anime is not as relatable as Saiki K, because Shuchiin Academy itself is full of elite students from rich families, or extremely talented and hardworking students like Shirogane.

Shirogane flexing his perfect grades

Shinomiya standing humbly in front of a collage of her achievements

Shinomiya, daughter of the esteemed Shinomiya Group, who has so many expectations pinned on her not only from her family, but also from the public, acts completely differently when she’s hanging out with the student council, or when she’s panicking over her feelings for Shirogane.

Shinomiya secretly freaking out over Shirogane's cat ears

That is what makes this anime quite amusing to watch, I think. While the two of them maintain composed and professional on the outside, their internal monologues are very relatable, and it is fun to see them have their own personalities outside of being the school’s model students.

Shirogane doing an excellent job at hiding his feelings for Shinomiya

Even Fujiwara, who many people find annoying because of her complete ignorance to the unspoken war between Shinomiya and Shirogane, started to grow on me throughout the series.
Fujiwara dancing without a care while Shinomiya tries to talk to her

She can be annoying at times, when her ignorance and naivety completely ruins the plans of both Shinomiya and Shirogane, but no one can deny the fact that she is absolutely adorable, and her ignorance is even endearing at times.

Fujiwara looking cute while not knowing things

A dance that she did for one of the ending songs went viral, and people all over the world reacted to the video and even shared their own covers of the dance. You can watch it here.

My favourite character of the series, however, is Ishigami. Originally, I didn’t really like his character design, because he just looks like a sleazy loser who plays video games and smells bad (which might actually be true), but I also found him the most relatable out of the main cast.

A dramatic low-shot with cinematic lighting of Ishigami shamelessly declare his desire to play video games and nothing else

He is lazy, unmotivated, and constantly has bad grades, which is something that I think a lot of us have experienced before. His outlook on life is also very depressing, which is something that I relate heavily to. It’s also funny sometimes how melodramatic he can be about things.

Ishigami turning to death at the slightest inconvenience

He does not care about things like reputation and appearance, but he gets the job done as the treasurer of the student council.

Shinomiya and Fujiwara reacting to Ishigami's passionate speech about his opinion on men who wear boxer briefs

During the sports festival arc, a major incident in his past is revealed, and it really confirmed for me that he is my favourite character in the anime. Despite his sluggish and gloomy behaviour, he has a strong sense of justice and will not back down when it comes to standing up for the right thing, which I think is really respectable.

Ishigami speaking his truth, with not a single care in the world

While there are some episodes that make me laugh, there were also episodes that tugged on my heartstrings and made me feel really emotional.

The student council making it just in time to watch fireworks together

Although this is considered a gag anime, I think it definitely has a lot more to offer as well, and I think it’s definitely worth a watch if you’re in the mood for something light-hearted and wholesome.

Virtual Youtubers: Nijisanji Members Highlight

まいど~~(Welcome~~)

NIJISANJI Group

It's been a while since my

Kiryu Coco's skit in her 3D stream

Tokoyami Towa performing for her audience

However, if the idol-like Hololive doesn't appeal to you, I'm here today to introduce another VTuber agency to you called NIJISANJI! Without further notice, let's see what NIJISANJI is like!

Ever since the group debuted in early 2018, it has amassed massive amounts of support as well as debuted many VTubers under their group. As of today, there are over 100 active VTubers in NIJISANJI and the number only continues to grow. NIJISANJI has even expanded to other regions in the world, namely, NIJISANJI EN, NIJISANJI KR and NIJISANJI ID.

NIJISANJI has a bigger scene in the VTuber industry due to them recruiting more frequently than other groups as well as that they have opened applications to male VTubers as well. With these many VTubers, I'm sure that you'll be able to find the one that appeals to you most so that you can enjoy watching and supporting them! Just like before, I'll pick some VTubers and introduce them to you so that you can give them a try in watching their content. With that said, let's get to the first one!

Himawari Honma

Himawari Honma

Debuted in July 2018, Himawari Honma has garnered a lot of fans the past two years. Formerly of NIJISANJI Gamers, the group was annexed into NIJISANJI itself over time.

Himawari Honma is the epitome of cheerful itself. From her debut till today, she has maintained her easygoing and outgoing vibe. In her streams, she's always being cheerful and bright, bringing smiles to her live audience. Even to other VTuber's under NIJISANJI, she has been often praised of being fun to hang out with. I can see why too! I seldom get bored watching her stream just because she's so cheerful. It's like watching a younger sister play games. Just like her name, Himawari is exactly like a sunflower, being able to make someone else happy through watching her. A bright and everlasting entertainment.

Himawari takes a sudden break from a horror game to appreciate a "trumpet"

Happy Himawari after winning a game

She usually streams herself playing video games that are light to watch such as Smash, Donkey Kong and Minecraft. She also does collaborations with other VTubers sometimes where they either play games or have entertaining and funny conversations with each other. For me, while I do not watch her stream on a schedule, I try to whenever I can because my day would get at least a little bit better from all the positive energy that she leaks out. She's also infamously known to be a klutz sometimes, just like when she mistook the sun and the moon to be the same entity! Here are some of her highlights to get you started.

A cute mistake

Tsukino Mito

Tsukino Mito

One of the first VTuber to debut under NIJISANJI, Tsukino Mito has long made her mark on the VTuber industry, Having amassed a total of more than half a million Youtube subscribers, she takes the cake for being the most popular Youtuber in the NIJISANJI group. And with justification!

In her profile, she's portrayed as a high school student. Although your first impression of her might be that she is a tsundere and seiso(innocent and wholesome), she's actually far off from that! She's very outspoken and direct, with no fear of her words getting clipped out of context. Tsukino Mito also plays games that are either very low in quality or in old age, garnering amusement from her fans. It's all because of this that I enjoy watching her stream. After a while, you realize that she's just like one of us, trying to have fun and entertain others. Because of this, I never get bored watching her because I can relate to her as much as any of her fans can due to a sense of familiarity she has subconsciously created.

Tsukino Mito playing a game I nor any other listeners have seen before

Tsukino Mito openly speaks her mind of her colleague who was late to a collab

As previously said, she usually streams herself playing games that most likely hasn't seen light, for pure entertainment. These streams are usually packed with comedy because of her acting out from what you'd expect from an innocent-looking high school student. She does, however, play a lot of gacha games, specifically The Idolmaster: Shiny Colors. If you're looking for someone comedic as well as down to earth, Tsukino Mito might be a VTuber that you might want to watch!

Inui Toko

Inui Toko

Inui Toko debuted over a year ago on March 2019 alongside Lize Helesta and Ange Katrina. Even after only one year, she has managed to attract almost 300,000 subscribers, an impressive feat. Let's see why there are 300,000 fans of Inui Toko!

Inui Toko is someone that if I had to choose to be a close friend with, it would be her. Her personality is that of a laid-back and easygoing individual. She's also very witty and someone great to talk to, as can be seen from her marshmallow-reading (Q&A) streams. Moreover, she has a unique and melodious voice! For example, she has done covers of many songs and they all have garnered massive support from fans. For me, whenever I'm working on stuff on my PC, I'll have her stream open in the background while I work. Occasionally, I'll chuckle at her comeback towards a certain marshmallow, and sometimes open the tab back up on the rare occasion that she does or says something cute. Overall, she's definitely one of my favourite VTuber if I had to name one.

Inui Toko "accidentally" reveals her spending

Inui Toko's marshmallow-reading stream

Surprisingly, as a VTuber, she doesn't play that much of a variety of games. Her streams are mostly that of talking with her audience while she has her game open. She also often does marshmallow-reading streams. If you're someone that appreciates the slow pace of Inui Toko's conversation with her audience, I can recommend no one better than her!

Hayato Kagami

Hayato Kagami

Marking this month as his debut anniversary, Hayato Kagami debuted on 6 July 2019. For the past year, his streams have been a part of my daily life lately, with me almost not missing a single stream of his. As to why I'll explain.

Hayato Kagami introduces himself as the CEO of a company. From what I have seen, Hayato-san is an outgoing yet cautious individual. Outgoing in a sense that he's someone that would break an awkward atmosphere in a newly-met group. Cautious in a sense where even with close friends, he would address them with honorifics. Just from that alone, I can tell he's a respectful individual. Other than that, he is probably my favourite male VTuber because if I ever became one, I want to be like him. Confident, respectful and fun to be with.

Hayato Kagami-san meets his fans on Animal Crossing

Hayato Kagami-san getting teased while playing Apex Legends

As for his streams, he usually plays what interests him the most. Like for example, as of now, he's currently doing a playthrough of Dark Souls Remastered. There's no one set game that he'll play. From FPS games like Titanfall and Apex, to sandbox ARK, and even Animal Crossing. He even does streams where he's singing, or even just talking to his audience, which are the ones I look forward to the most. And of course, another small reason I watch him is that his voice is smooth and pleasing to hear. Hayato-san is what I would consider more of a Twitch streamer rather than a VTuber because of his sporadic game choices. But that's exactly what I like about him, he plays a different game every day but still manages to keep everyone entertained.

Shizuka Rin

Shizuka Rin

Shizuka Rin was also one of the first VTubers under NIJISANJI, debuting along with Tsukino Mito as well as Higuchi Kaede. Along with the other two, they have a term for their group called "JK Gumi"(high school girl group). Most importantly, she was my first ever VTuber that I watch and my favourite VTuber ever.

Shizurin (her nickname), is a mature and demure individual. She's always really calm in her streams, never raging or screaming in frustration. Well, while she's not playing horror games, that is. Her streams are generally really laid-back and relaxed, with no specific goal in mind. Coupled with the fact that she has a really smooth and "onee-san" like voice, Shizurin's streams are the best to watch late at night for entertainment and relaxation. More often than not, I always find myself opening her stream whenever she starts one, regardless of the time. A new stream from Shizurin to me is like an episode of a really interesting drama to others.

Shizuka Rin tries her best in FFXIV

As for her streams, Shizurin mostly plays Final Fantasy XIV Online and Dead By Daylight. As an avid player of FFXIV myself, I'm glad that I can enjoy FFXIV even when I'm not playing the game myself! Other than that, whenever there's a game that spikes her curiosity, she starts playing that game regularly for a while. As much as I would like to hear her sing with her fabulous voice, she rarely streams herself karaoke, unlike others. But that's fine, I'll still be watching her streams regularly because she's my favourite VTuber!

A terrified rabbit meets Shizuka Rin

And that's it for NIJISANJI members highlights! I hope you enjoyed reading this post and the videos of VTubers as well! I do hope that you have found your new favourite VTuber so that you can enjoy watching and supporting them anytime! If you're new to VTubers, be sure to

Happy watching VTubers!
