Hibike! Euphonium

Listen to the music! Da da da da da...! While I don't think that some official record exists, I would certainly imagine that April is a month of music. Anime Mirai has a couple of music-themed shorts which I so happen to appreciate. The natural instincts would play out the groove as the numbers fluidly sound through the ears. Ah...what would the universe become without music? Naturally, I wouldn't be able to contrive the music lover in me, and a lot of other creations would be incomplete no matter how intricate. Anime for instance, would probably feel awkward and unbearable. Speaking of which, I have another anime to share with readers that would hopefully send huge tidal waves into anybody's heart. Okay, I seriously need to conjure new metaphors to suit various occasions. Meanwhile, may I invite readers to visit Kitauji High School or more specifically, Kitauji High School's Concert Band Club!

Hibike! Euphonium is a newly-premiered anime series adapted from the titular novel written by Takeda Ayano. Produced by Kyoto Animation, the anime aired its debut episode on 7th April. The story begins with a concert band competition at Kyoto Concert Hall, where members of participating school concert bands in Kansai have been waiting eagerly for the results of the preliminary competition which would grant the winning schools an opportunity to advance in the regionals. An incident causes an emotional outburst from one of the girls whom the protagonist, Oumae Kumiko becomes profoundly affected by. Fast forward to her first year in Kitauji High School, Kumiko gets ready to begin life as a freshman. She reflects a little about what high school means to her. The backdrop of falling cherry blossoms accentuates Kumiko's new identity as her words depict her otherwise reminiscent feelings.

A bright, loud voice from afar disrupts Kumiko's train of thoughts as she meanders through the recruitment drive for the school's various clubs. The concert band club proceeds to welcome all the freshmen with its rendition of 'Abarenbou Shougun'. However, unlike other students a shocked Kumiko concludes that the performance sucks big time. This feeling carries forth into the classroom where she gets acquainted with the girl sitting behind her, Katou Hazuki. Homeroom begins, and a small blunder during roll call introduces Kawashima Sapphire, a soft-spoken and timid girl. Kumiko and Sapphire discover that they were both involved in their ex-schools' concert bands, while a baffled Hazuki listens in. The girls then decide to pop by the concert band club where something eccentric happens (I love that part very much!). A fourth girl appears along the way, catching Kumiko off-guard. Thankfully, Kumiko is able to somewhat stifle her screams. The said girl is Kousaka Reina.

The visit leaves the girls with largely mixed feelings, particularly Kumiko. Nonetheless, a determined Sapphire decides to give the concert band a shot. Kumiko remains undecided as she struggles to piece her thoughts together. Her childhood friend Shuuichi seems set to join the concert band as well. Back home, Kumiko's elder sister Mamiko adds more food for thought. The following day, Kumiko seems more certain about her direction.

Well, the various instruments featured in Hibike! Euphonium have left me totally dumbfounded! Let's see, besides the Euphonium, there is the Tuba, Contrabass, Trumpet, Trombone, Horn, Alto, Tenor, Baritone, Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Timpani, Cymbals, Snare Drums, Bass Drums and Glockenspiel (what in the world?)! Naturally, I have never seen most of those anywhere in my life. Even if I had, I wouldn't know! Anyway, Hibike! Euphonium has got me interested to follow Kitauji High School's concert band club in their adventures. I'm so looking forward to the next episode!

Eccentrically Yours.
