Mystic Messenger

Tuesday, September 20, 2016 / No Comments
If you have been thinking why I haven't been active lately on Milkcananime, here's your answer: games, school projects, assignments and examinations!

In addition to my recent post on Haikyuu Donpishamatch which you can read here, I have recently immersed in a game called Mystic Messenger. Sounds familiar? Of course! This game has risen to be one of the most popular otome games!
Despite this game being Korea-based, I have decided to mention it on this blog because many people worldwide currently do play it, including Japanese. So, what's the deal with this game? The catch is that it's fully patched in English as far as text in concerned, making it understandable for most of the people globally. Furthermore, it is easily accessible on mobile, and no new devices are necessary to play.

If you're an otome-gamer like myself, you might remember the days when Google Play had otome games on and you would have to wait for days to get a new chapter, or if you were feeling rich, you could always pay a small fee per story to read it immediately... or worse still, you have to pay to get access to the stories! But with Mystic Messenger, the majority of the game is free!

But before I talk about the paid features of this game, let me first introduce some...

Story!

The story goes as such: Rika and V started up an organisation, RFA, and in the RFA they host fundraising parties. Rika talks the participants into joining for the party and V contributes his photographs, as he is a famous pro-photographer, and they held many successful parties. The other members as mentioned above helped out too and everyone had lots of fun.

Cue in Rika's death and ever since, V has not been himself. He has changed and is more secretive and participates in RFA's conversations less. They do not hold parties anymore either. The RFA group has split into 2, some doubting V and some all for giving him more time to get over his grief.

Among all of this, a stranger "Unknown" calls you and asks you to go to an address to find the owner of a phone he picked up, and at the apartment you find the RFA's chatroom and you start participating in it. Before long, you realize that you are at Rika's apartment and you have gradually melded into the RFA group. What's next is to take over Rika's job and host a party within a week!

This is pretty self-explanatory, and this is the first screen you see when you start a new game. In a new game, you'll have to start with the original route where you get to choose either the "casual story" or the "deep story". Each features different people.

For the casual story, you get Yoosung, ZEN and Jaehee while for the deep story, you get Jumin and 707. For a better interpretation of the members, let's look at the next image~
From left we have: Jumin, ZEN, 707, Yoosung and Jaehee.

A brief one-liner description of the characters are as follows: Jumin is the handsome heir to a corporation and he loves cats. ZEN is an actor famous for his looks and talents, but he is a little (too) narcissistic at times and he can't find a girlfriend. 707 is a hacking prodigy, however he seems a little crazy at times if you don't get his humor (He is also undoubtedly the most popular character in-game right now). Yoosung is the most relate-able character in this game, being the University student that puts games and entertainment before studies. Jaehee is a female and she is the assistant of Jaehee, she may come across strict and uptight but she is very kind at heart and an avid fan for ZEN. If you progress on ZEN's route, she will come and attempt to talk you out of it.

There is also a character called Rika (who is dead) and V.
Pressing the '?' on Jaehee's right will give you clues as to what the different buttons are for. Though clicking on the RFA's members will give you their profiles.
When they have a changed status, their icon will be colored yellow. The status will give you clues as to whether you should call them. As the game runs on real time, you shouldn't call them when they are busy (i.e. calling them in the morning when their status mentions morning classes).

Why is this important, you may ask? Because calling takes up Hourglasses (HG) which are the "currency" in this game. You may get HG from chats or from purchasing, but if you're stingy like me, you shouldn't waste them on a call that wouldn't be picked up or will be going to the voicemail.
These are all the incoming calls I have gotten so far. I haven't called anyone yet, though calling would help boost your love points a lot.

In calls, you have the voice actor speaking to you in Korean and you can choose to hold your phone to your ear like a normal phone call, use earphones, or put it on speaker like I do. Despite it being in Korean, there are English subs for every line they say, even when you have to choose between options to reply them. I recommend focusing on the subs and reply first, then review the conversation later.

By pressing the white play button, you will be able to hear the conversation all again in its full glory, albeit with your input choices. The green call button is of course to redial, and that will take 5 HG per call, where it can either connect, not be picked up, or just go to voicemail.

Calls typically occur after chatrooms, so stay on your toes.
Chatrooms are chosen based on days which run by real time. Thus the best time to start is at midnight, in order to get 100% for all your days. There's no typical significance to getting 100%, at least so far for me, but it gives you more exposure to the storyline, more interaction with the characters and more time to bond with them.

Also, the route branches after the last chat on Day 4 and the character's whose route you are on will appear on the blank "RFA" space under the 100% from Day 5 onward. To safely get on a non-bad ending route in the "Casual story", you have to bond a lot with one of the three (ZEN, Yoosung and Jaehee) -- the bond cannot be similar. You will also have to lay low on Jumin and 707 because you can't play their routes via the Casual story (only in Deep Story). Doing either of the "DO NOTs" will lead you to having no character shown on Day 5 and onward, and you will be on the way to seeing a Bad Ending.
The chatrooms have rather crazy timings such as 1 a.m. then 3 or 4 a.m. then 7 a.m. I don't know why the game developers think you'll be awake at all those random timings, maybe it's a Korean thing?

Anyway, the above is an image of chatrooms at not-so-crazy timings. You can see that chatrooms open at 17:04 and 19:18 and so on. To put it simply, if you were intending to participate in the 17:04 chat, you have from 17:04 to 19:17 to participate it in!

All the chats which you were in will have an orange border and new chats which you haven't checked will be green. If there are any chats below the green one, they will be grey and you cannot participate in them until you clear the green one first. You can always re-enter a chat in orange and read the conversation with your chosen choices. However to participate in a chat again, you need 5 HG.
You get to choose options in this chatroom style otome game, which is quite a fresh idea, especially one where the chatroom is such a significant (if not only) portion of the game.
Chatroom style conversations are quite realistic and you can pause the chat if the speech bubbles are passing my too fast. "SLOW" and "FAST" help toggle the speed, with the normal being at 6 and "FAST" going up to 9. The top left also has a "Max speed" option if you have read the conversation already.
Hearts are proof of love, and each character has a corresponding heart color. Purple for Jumin, grey for ZEN, red for 707, green for Yoosung and yellow for Jaehee.

And if you haven't noticed by now, not all the RFA members are in a chat at a single time. Occasionally, V comes by as well. I really wish he was a playable character...
Stamps/stickers of each character are used by the respective character. They are animated in the chat, which unfortunately, I can only show via two separate images here. Most of them come with some voice attached as well!

Here's a short display of 707's insanity as well as how the variation in text bubbles and font gives great variation.

Also, the fact that images are sent by them through chats. I currently have the most number of ZEN's pictures and that can be attributed to how he loves to take selfies so...
After finishing the chatroom, remember to click "Sign". Signing means that the system recognizes that you participated in the chat and you can re-read it as many times as you want later on. If you leave without signing, you will require 5 HG to participate in that chat later on.

And yes, you can get HGs from chats. Typically, I get a maximum of 1 HG but I got lucky on this chat! Also, each heart that you get from the different characters will be turned into that gold heart, which you can use to trade in for HG -- 100 hearts for 1 HG, still, better than nothing. Plus, changing between saves doesn't change HG or heart count, even if you load to a save before the chat time. I tried this while attempting to complete both ZEN's bad and good ends at the same time... so try your best to get as many HG as you can!

Why am I going on and on about HG? Well, the reason is simple.

You can buy HG with real money, so that means that HG will bring benefits to the playing experience.

1. Save slots
As a free user, you have access to only 4 save slots and you can unlock another save slot for 50 HG. Of course, I haven't spent any so I'm not sure if the HG requirement scales, but it would be unlikely that that is so.

HG are of course, not only used in this manner.

2. Calling
As I've mentioned before, calling is good for building up relationships quickly and you get to hear their dreamy voices. However, it takes 5 HG per RNG try so I'm not sure how much you value the call. They might call you back if you can't reach them though :)

There are also unlimited calling cards for all the characters are approximately $30, and for individual characters. It differs between characters, with Jumin being at one of the highest at $7+ and 707 being one of the cheapest at $3-4+.

3. Re-entering chats
You wouldn't run into this problem if you save before and after each chat at least, but with our limited free slots, we might run out of space or forget too. HG are spent to re-participate in these chats and chats are a very good way to gain hearts -- gold hearts to exchange for HG as well as love points hearts for your character!

4. Deep Story
Although I put this at the end, this is probably the reason that motivates most people to spend. You need a whopping 80 HG to unlock the deep route which brings you to Jumin and 707's route. They have a separate common route (from what I've heard) and of course, their own endings as well. Their routes also casts more light on the story.

5. Other Features?
There is already mention that other features will be added, but there isn't anything specific yet. Though, I would appreciate V's route, but would that be under "Deep Deep story"? Maybe you'll need 160 HG to unlock it this time round?

Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom

Tuesday, June 24, 2014 / No Comments
Otome games? Yes, yes, and yes.

While there are many different platforms and consoles to play games on, my favourite has definitely got to be playing on my PSP. Mainly because it's portable and I don't have to lug it around like I have to do with my laptop, and also because my phone is a piece of rock.

But anyhow. I'm going to introduce you to one really really amazing otome game. Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom. Actually, that's the only one that I ever fully played through because that was also the only PSP game I managed to find that was fully in English.

are you liking this yet?
So what's this game about? Well, Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom is basically a Samurai Romance visual novel set at the end of the Edo period of Japanese history. The period that witnessed the decline of the Shogunate as the ruling power in Japan.

And as you go through the game, every decision and route you take determines your future. Which, in this case, means which gorgeous guy you're going to end up with. But it's not just about the romance. I love the main plot as well, although the plot twist was actually quite predictable. Ahhh, I'm not going to spoil anything.

Moving on, you play the role of a young woman by the name of Chizuru Yukimura who is in search of her father, working as a doctor for the Shinsengumi (definition). When you reach your destination, however, what greets you is not your dad, but the fact that he has been missing for quite some time.

Chizuru Yukimura

The Shinsengumi then takes you in, and looks after you while the search for your dad continues. And that's where your real adventure starts, because there's when your actions and decisions will start to take effect.

So, there are five stunning guys in the bachelor pool. Toshizou Hijikata, Souji Okita, Hajime Saito, Heisuke Todo, and Sanosuke Harada. You can also get the main villain, Chikaga Kazama, but if i remember correctly, that route only opens when you complete the game for the first time.

Toshizo Hijikata
Souji Okita
Hajime Saito
Heisuke Todo
Sanosuke Harada
Chikaga Kazama
Okay, so let's be honest here. When you first saw their pretty pretty faces, who did you first pick? For me, I definitely went with Saito. I don't know why, I think it was because he looked the coolest. But, I didn't end up with Saito. (Side note, I didn't know Kazama was available till wayyyy later, if not I would have picked him. No contest there.)

So anyway, here's another really awesome thing about this game. You can actually check the romance stats ingame, to see who you are currently most affectionate with. Which is good, since the second half on the game branches off to different event scenes depending on who you are the closest with. The first half is fairly straightforward as you get to know all the handsome devils, but the second part, ooh that's where it gets steamy. Of course, there are the good endings and the bad endings for every route, as well as what I call the no ending. Which means you don't get anyone.

no ending
However, getting the guy that you really want like be tough, as it's quite difficult to determine which guy goes for which action. When you do pick the correct action though, the game will inform you by not so subtly showing you a falling blossom on screen. You can always go back over your saved data if you picked the wrong choice.

I really liked this game because even though the conversation text was in English, the voice was Japanese and that just sealed the deal for me. I actually took the time to listen to every sentence, and I'm the type that loves to spam the next button. The voice actors were terrific, perfect emotion played in, and the graphics! Now it's one thing to have the right tone, but when the right tone matches up with the right expression.. Bam, goodbye heart. It also doesn't hurt that midgame, their costume changes to western clothing and woah. Just. Woah.

yesssss
Though I will admit the one frustrating thing is that Chizuru (the character you play) comes off as weak and almost practically useless, ugh.

Right, so the first time I played this game I just played as I would, choosing the options that I would normally take. And I'm not going to tell you who I ended up with. I will however, leave you with the descriptions of all the bachelors so you can decide if the handsome devil you've ended up with is really suitable for you.

Hijikata: The "Demon" Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi as well as the Titular Character & Poster-boy for the series. He's very strict, serious & almost scary at times, but as you progress through his story, he turns out to be very caring.

Okita: The sadistic, sarcastic 1st Unit Captain Psychopath who often teases or even threatens you. He holds unwavering loyalty toward Head Commander Isami Kondou & has little regard for human life. As you play through his story, you find out that he's not as cruel as he seems.

Saito: The stoic, blunt & socially inept Captain of the 3rd unit who only speaks when spoken to, He never does anything without the Vice-commander's approval & never denies his orders, which ends him in doing "dirty work". As you play through his story, you'll soon find out the reasons for his unrelenting loyalty.

Heisuke: This cheerful young man is the Captain of the 8th unit. He may be small, but what he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in heart & fighting spirit. If you play through Haisuke's story, you'll find his tale is quite different from most of the other bachelors.

Sanosuke: The optimistic 10th unit captain with a big-brother-like demeanor. Although he may be quick tempered at times, he is a warm & very gentle man with a kind heart. Sano is usually the first to comfort you in stressful or dangerous situations. As you play though his story, you find out his dreams don't lie within the sword.

Kazama: Before you can have you hunk of man-meat, you must first unlock him by playing through at least 2 of the other stories. Kazama is cold-hearted, selfish, cruel & he'll do anything to get his demony mitts on you.

So which gorgeous hunk did you end up with?

Nana's Fall'17 Outlook

Wednesday, September 13, 2017 / No Comments
Fall is one of those times where it suddenly feels cathartic to sit in a park and gaze at falling red and yellow leaves... until the cool breeze blows dust straight into my face. Life is just so unpoetic when you're not an anime protagonist. That being said, it will soon be time to live vicariously through a brand new season of anime!

It's not revolutionary for darker themes to creep in with action and comedy series during the fall anime season, but there are a few standouts for me. Let's get started!

1. Hoozuki no Reitetsu Season 2

HnR is the anime that I have always been most keen on for a new season. It is definitely one of my favourite anime and I have watched it at least four times. The story centers around Hoozuki, an oni who works under King Enma, AKA the Big Man of Hell. For lack of better description, Hoozuki routinely intimidates and bullies the Great King into doing his work seriously. With a colourful supporting cast of various underworld-dwelling creatures, I highly recommend this slightly morbid comedy to anyone interested in the supernatural and Japanese folktales!

2. Kekkai Sensen & Beyond

KKSS was extremely well-received among my circle of friends despite its deviation from the manga and I am glad a new season has been decided on! If the first season was any indication, we can expect more shenanigans from our motley crue of anime blood benders. Man, I absolutely can't wait to see Zapp's gorgeous self onscreen again!! (ง ˃̶͈̀ᗨ˂̶͈́)۶

3. Osake wa Fuufu ni Natte kara

The "slightly sweet tipsy couple comedy" centers on the 28-year-old senior public relations company staff member Chisato Mizusawa. The story follows Chisato's daily life as she enjoys her husband Sora's cocktails. However, she has secrets that only he knows..? It seems really adorable! I might read the manga beforehand...

4. Kino no Tabi

We're definitely not going to see a let up on light novels being adapted to manga and honestly, why would we? Most, if not all, have been rather successful! Kino is the main protagonist in the series and travels to different countries with her talking motorcycle Hermes. She is skilled in combat, carrying both guns and knives, and is accustomed to life as a traveler. To those she meets, she is invariably polite and answers questions directly. Sounds like my kind of protagonist!

5. Ousama Game

An entire high school class of 32 people receive a message on their cellphones from a person known only as the "King." The messages contain orders that the students must obey, or they risk the punishment of death. With their lives on the line, the students soon find out that the orders are getting more and more extreme as time goes on. While the manga was not as outstanding as others in the mystery/horror genre, I feel like having the story animated with suitable background music might give it a fresh breath of life.

6. Shokugeki no Souma Season 3

A mainstay in my outlook posts, simply because I am an absolute glutton. I love the art, the lighthearted moments, the serious moments... You can say I am weirdly passionate about animated food. Also I gotta admit, Shinomiya is the best looking megane in anime... ever. (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ

Bonus:

7. Dies irae

I am slightly apprehensive about it as it is adapted from a visual novel, but I really like its setting in the anime introduction!

8. Sengoku Night Blood

While I always start off with high hopes for my otome games, I tend to get irritated and lose interest quickly, and unfortunately the same often happens with anime adapted from otome. That being said, I have a serious weakness for Sengoku era themed ikemen and can't help myself from wanting to watch this... ( ˘ ³˘)♥ <- a lost cause (me)

9. Urahara

The poster is so pretty... Not to mention, the aliens and Harajuku, a wacky combo that I am keen to see! (In fact, I am getting mild Tsuritama x magical girl vibes.)

Pretty long list this time! There are lots of interesting anime this season, I hope I have enough time to watch them all! What anime are you looking out for this fall?

「Mobage」Yumeiro Cast: Introduction to Gameplay (Part 1/2)!

Friday, December 30, 2016 / No Comments
Here's to the next update on the game "Yumeiro Cast", otherwise known as YumeCast. It is also one of the games which I am very much into currently and I'll like this game to reach out to more individuals as well!
Upon starting the game for the first time, you will see this screen with seven bishounen and fret not because you will be able to choose your starter. YumeCast is a rhythm and otome game, which means that you will be able to bond with one guy and read stories which are written and presented as they are in otome games. That being said, you can bond with any of the 7 characters, it just depends on which guy you set as your partner~
Chibis are not the only cute thing in this game. The faces of your cards in the panels are really pretty too and this is cleverly illustrated even in the tutorial. There are also 3 different types of notes in this game, namely yellow tap notes, blue hold notes and green double tap notes.
Notes appear at the corner of each of the 8 panels and when it  converges to the center, that's when you need to place your finger to the phone (or remove it). This style of gameplay layout is very different from the other rhythm games I have played and it needed some getting use to. In fact, I am still in the midst of getting used to it.
Stories are also provided in this game. There are 4 broad categories of stories: main drama, idolised stories, bonding stories, and new card stories.

Main drama consists of the main stories which are unlocked when you hit a particular rank.

Idolised stories are unlocked when you idolise a card, and each of these stories will give you 5 dream stones. This applies to cards of all rarities.

Bonding stories are unlocked every 5 heart levels. The leader of each team will be given "love points" at the end of every live performance (musical) and these points will be used to level up heart levels. Each increase in heart level will give the player a better score if they tap the same particular character. As heart levels are tied to the character and not the card, increasing the heart level of a character would result in a higher point offset given when tapping any card of the character.

New card stories are unlocked when you acquire a brand new card. This extends to cards of all rarities, though, you do not get any additional items from reading these stories, but simply getting to know the character better.

After going through the tutorial of the different notes, you will be asked to choose your starter. For this, you will get a Rare card from a scout and later get a second copy for idolisation. Now, allow me to do some bad translation for you.
Sorry, I didn't take a screenshot of the caption for Kyouya.
Iori: Don't overexert yourself, idiot. It's obvious that you're pushing yourself.
Sousei: I won't give you up to anyone.
Hinata: As punishment, you need to give me a lap pillow~
Kaito: Remember. Your everything... belongs to me.
Jin: Come over, Princess. Let's continue our lesson...
Subaru: Just watch me! I will show you a dream you've never seen!

Scouting in the game is similar to Idolm@ster Deresute: Starlight stage. You get a clipboard and you have to slide it open to reveal your cards. This same setup is valid for both the Friend Points Gacha and the Dream Stone Gacha.
As a second part to this tutorial, you need to play an Easy version of the first song on the normal side "Call Heaven!!". Each musical is divided into 4 parts: Part A, B, C and Full. As seen in the image below the parts A to C require less AP and will give less exp too. In events, they give less event points as well.
r the normal side, all songs give 1 Dream Stone for Score S, inclusive of Parts A to C. Experts also give 1 Dream Stone for its first clear (only entitled to the Full version). You get 1 Dream Stone for every 15th, 30th and 50th play of Expert songs. This is applicable for most Hard songs as well.

Just let it rain Dream Stones~

Do note that however, some of the Special songs do not have Dream Stones for Parts A to C so do check before playing the songs. There are Special songs dedicated to help increase love points too!
After every update (at least the 2 I have been through), there is a short drama which will cover most of the new Gacha updates. This shows the Christmas scout that I experienced after starting the game.

This is the event UR which as given out during the event as a points reward. I might make a separate article sometime later to cover the event itself. About the card, the left is the unidolised version and the right is the idolised.
This is the Christmas Subaru card and similarly, the left is the unidoplised and the right is the idolised. Thankfully, I managed to scout two copies and idolise him! This card looks so good idolised!

For the next part of the Introduction, I will be mentioning several additional info such as the Theatre and the Backstage details as well as cover some important updates (Season 3) that have recently kicked into the game. After which, I'll start on covering the mechanics of the events and how they compare to other rhythm games I play or have played.

If you want to know more about the 7 characters, feel free to check out my previous YumeCast article here!
