Pokemon News Part Two: Of conspiracy theories and global reactions

Friday, July 22, 2016 / No Comments

Well this is impressive. On the same day that I was writing Part One, saying how Pokemon Go looks set to be the Donald Trump of news, this bombshell dropped.

Saudi Arabia's top clerics have renewed a religious edict that warns against playing Pokemon. The edict notes that a six-pointed star in the game, for example, is associated with the state of Israel and that certain triangular symbols hold important meanings for the Freemasonry. And here I thought conspiracies were only for crazy people.

The story gets even weirder. Crosses in the game are a symbol of Christianity, while other symbols are associated with polytheism, says the edict. Alice in Wonderland is looking sane by comparison. And if you think the Saudis are the only ones, read on.

Russian authorities have also weighed in on Pokemon Go, saying that it resembles Western intelligence agencies and the Devil himself. To be exact, Franz Klintsevich, the first deputy chairman of the Federal Council’s Committee on Defense, said: “There’s the feeling that the Devil has arrived through this mechanism, and he’s simply trying to ruin us spiritually, from within.”

It is interesting to note that even with talk of "politically destabilising effects" Pokemon Go is not banned in Russia. Yet.

In Indonesia, governor Made Mangku Pastika of the Indonesian island of Bali has prohibited public officials from using the augmented reality game. Pastika recently told the Tribun Bali, “If they [public officials] jump on the Pokémon bandwagon, then there’s no need for them to ever come back to the office again.” Well at least this makes SOME sense, though a bit extreme.

And then we move to the first world countries. Australian authorities have declared that “I was collecting Pokemon” is not a legal defense” for people charged with trespassing. Funny, I was just mentioning that in Part One. Kudos to them for reacting swiftly.

The next part is hilarious, and also related to trespassing.
The Australian police also urged Pokemon players to stop trying to catch Sandshrew in the Darwin Police Station. “For those budding Pokemon Trainers out there using Pokemon Go—whilst the Darwin Police Station may feature as a Pokestop, please be advised that you don’t actually have to step inside in order to gain the pokeballs,” they wrote on Facebook.  As police stations are considered public places, I can see the problem in trying to make people leave without incident already.

Portugal is the most moderate when it comes to Pokemon measures. As part of list of commonsense rules for playing Pokemon Go, the Portuguese police have warned Pokemon trainers not to hunt Pokemons while driving, since it’s too hard to do two things at once. On their Facebook page, the police also posted a message saying: “Don’t go hunting alone” and “don’t enter private property, it’s a crime.” So far they have not reported any Pokemon related arrests yet.

I have only covered a few countries in Part Two. Some are rather minor points, like Portugal's take on phone driving. The Middle East looks dead set against it already, for dubious reasons. It will be interesting to see further developments as
more people start to play. Check back in a week for Part Three.

Pokemon: Hacked Roms

Saturday, April 14, 2018 / No Comments
Hello my nuggets!

With holiday season soon approaching, I suspect most of you should be heading overseas for vacation, which means potentially long flight hours. Well, I'm here to bring you guys a source of entertainment for those long hours.

Pokemon hacked roms! If you've already played all the other pokemon series and/or are unable to bring your gadgets overseas, fear not! You can play these roms on your phone! All you need is an emulator, for which I highly recommend using MyBoy (Android).

Now, you might ask what exactly are hacked roms? Are they some sort of virus?? Not to worry, hacked roms are basically modded games; alterations to the base game's graphics, dialogue, gameplay, plot, or etc. These are usually done by amazing people to bring you new content using an old game's engine.

There are plenty of hacked roms out there, but I'm going to list you a few of my favourite pokemon ones! The ones that I'm about to list down are either completed or not quite yet, but you'll still be able to complete the game regardless.

One of my favourites is Pokemon Adventure- Red Chapter by Aethestode! This one is based on the Pokemon Adventure/ Special manga, with added extras. Red Chapter is constantly being updated, the last I played it was at Beta 11E, and now it's at 13~ It's ridiculously amazing with a whole bunch of cool features. There are also some little funny dialogue which made me crack up.

I'm going to link the webpage, and add some screenshots in case you're too lazy to head over.

The next one I've completed is Pokemon Glazed by Redriders 180 (Lucbu). This also has a little twist; other than fighting Team 'Rocket', you also have a Pikachu as a rival of sorts. This is hilarious because the Pikachu is full of rage and and hell-bent on revenge. Plus you get to choose between five starters instead of the usual three.

Do check out the webpage for more details, I'm pretty sure you guys will like this rom too.

Pokemon Light Platinum is highly raved about, and I too, recommend playing this first if you're wondering if you should enter the world of hacked roms at all. I should warn though, that there are multiple versions available, such as the Mega, Plus, and Final? I went with the normal Light Platinum and there were no issues for me. I'm not too sure what are the differences between these, but Light Platinum works well.

don't worry, there's an english version
I think this is the webpage for Light Platinum, the thread is mad long.

I touched a little on Pokemon Sweet, and this is one mad cute hack. The pokemon are all some sort of variant of a sweet, and the Squirtle I chose as my starter is an apple pie. I'm not too sure about the storyline, but it does get a little tedious remembering the type chart since the type chart is now entirely sweet based. The map is always super cute because everything is now candy!! The trees are icecream cones!!!

Check it out here~

The last one for now is the one I'm currently playing- Pokemon Shiny Gold Sigma. I'd say it's a little tougher because I can't seem to somehow breeze through this as I have with the others. This actually requires some grinding. I don't remember spending as much time grinding on the other roms as much as this one. Although, you get a lucky egg quite early in game that increases your exp gained so that is really handy.

Here is the link!

The others I have downloaded but have yet to touch are Pokemon Eternal Snow and Pokemon Flora Sky. They see pretty promising but there's only so much time I have travelling on public transport or on a flight. If you do play these first, let me know how they are!

I'm off to finish up and perhaps look for more, nerd out for now!

3DS: Pokemon ORAS

Saturday, January 10, 2015 / No Comments
Hello my fellow Pokemon fanatics!

I bring you Pokemon ORAS, that is, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. I've completed the game a while back, and am now hunting down the legendaries as well as attempting to complete the pokedex.

Unlike the other Pokemon games, I find that ORAS brings a lot more to the story and gameplay. For example, while the other Pokemon games tend to end after the defeat of the elite four, ORAS adds an extra story bit, the Delta Episode, featuring a young Draconid named Zinnia, her irritating Whismur, and the mighty Rayquaza

Mega Rayquaza looks terrible to me. Like a garndpa with a beard
But let's start from the beginning. If you've played Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald before, ORAS stays close to the original storyline, with the addition of the Delta Episode. As with the RSE, depending on the version you chose, you will butt heads with either Team Magma or Team Aqua. I played Alpha Sapphire, so the team I was up against was Team Aqua,

What is the Delta Episode?

"This part of the game tells of a story of an asteroid coming towards the planet with ties to things that happened 3000 years ago. It is said to tie together the mysteries of Mega Evolution and gives the history of Hoenn. This is done with the help of characters such as Steven and Wallace.

This story activates after you first beat the Elite Four. When you start your save it goes to Mossdeep City where Professor Cozmo is alerted to a disaster. A meteoroid is heading towards the planet, aiming for an island by Route 131. A Magma/Aqua grunt takes off her uniform and dons her normal clothing, proving herself to be Zinnia. She mentions things have got tricky because you stopped the primal Pokémon being revived."

Exciting much? Spoiler!! (You catch Deoxys here! If you killed it, you can try again at the Sky Pillar after defeating the elite four once more.)

Now, training-wise, I find it much easier to level up my team as the Exp, Share is given quite early in game, and as long as you don't skip any trainers, I'd say you're all set to trash anyone. And by anyone I mean the trainers in game, and not the Online Battles.

So, new game, new features?

ORAS features Mega Evolution, as well as extra pokemon that can mega evolve. ORAS also has a hotter version of Steven Stone (trust me, super hot) and his hella solid Mega Metagross. The new fairy type is also present in ORAS. I really detest the extra fairy type because my memory type chart match up is now messed up and I had to check for weakness and strengths, again.

ooh yassss

Pokemon Amie, Super Training, and the Horde Encounters are also available in ORAS. However, while we had the Battle Frontier in RSE, ORAS has changed that to a simple Battle Resort. I personally like the Battle Frontier better. I find that there are more battle variations in Battle Frontier.

SO COOL!!!! and yes, that's Wally with you
Also, one little thing that I realised. For caves and places that need flash, you don't actually need flash. For me, I turned my screen brightness up to maximum, then went back to the game. Tadah! The cave is still dark, but somehow bright enough for me to maneuver around.

After completing the game, go back to Littleroot, Prof Birch lets you choose another one out of the three starters from a different region. He does that thrice, I believe.

Up next, new characters! With the not so new feature of secret bases, there comes a Secret Base NPC, Aarune. You'll spot him mid game, and then after meeting him, you can use the TM Secret Power on suspicious spots to make your very own Secret Base! Mine is fashioned in a way that it kinda looks like a Pokemon Gym, heheh.

hurhur he does looks ridic old.
Lisia is also another new NPC, and she's in charge of the Pokemon Contests. Remember that? She has an Altaia, which can Mega Evolve, and beating her in any contest is a giant pain in the butt. Your best bet at beating her is using the Cosplay Pikachu. You will be able to get the cosplay Pikachu after your very first contest. I don't think you need to win the contest, though. All you need to do is max out Pika's contest stats, which won't take long since Cosplay Pika already has very high contest stats. Dress Pika up in the costume of your choice, and pray when you're up against Lisia.

Or you can google one of the sure win move sets.

One of the coolest things in ORAS is flying around on either Latias or Latios, depending on your version. Steven doesn't give you the Eon Flute that is required to summon Latios/ Latias until quite late in game, but it didn't matter much for me. The back and forth travelling is good exp. Having the Eon Flute means I don't have to teach my Pokemon fly, which is nice.

The PokeNav has also been upgraded, meaning that there are more new features. One is the News page, where news about your friends or people you have streetpassed will appear. which is really really cool. Another page shows you which pokemon you can encounter in that area, and which you have already caught. At times, a magnifying glass will pop up in the middle of the screen, which means that the pokemon nearby has a special move or ability, and that requires you to creep up on the pokemon, else it will be startled and escape. Realistic, yesh? (Ralts with its head poking out of the grass is wayyyyy too cute.)

Another realistic feature I like in ORAS is the scuba mask. When you dive underwater, you'll see your character in the scuba mask. There are also trainers underwater! Super cool. They won't ! at you though, you'll have to talk to them to initiate a battle. Go-goggles are also on when you go through the desert.

Also! You after completing the game, including Delta, you will be able to get both bikes after talking to three specific people. With the Mach Bike, you have to talk to the Hex Maniac on Route 111, and with the Acro Bike, talk to a birdkeeper on Route 119 (Surf & Waterfall), and then with any bike, talk to a Triathlete on the Battle Resort. You have to be riding your bike while you talk to them, if not it won't work.

Mirage Spots appear after you complete the game, where you can catch specific legendaries and other Pokemon from different regions. It's tedious work, completing the Pokedex, but with the new online trade system it is possible. It's even better if you have a friend with the other version of yours.

Well, I'm going to catch more Pokemon now

Nerd out!

I believe this is Steven shielding their eyes from Wallace because

look at this outfit, honestly

The new Mother of all apps: Pokemon Go and related news Part One

Wednesday, July 20, 2016 / 2 Comments

Now I was reading some Pokemon news today and, can you believe this image is actually Pokemon related? This Bosnian signboard is from an area that still has live land mines. There are an estimate of 120,000 LIVE mines still in Bosnia. And guess what, that will not deter the crazy Pokemon fan. No casualties yet, luckily. But they had better fence up the area quick.

Pokemon Go as become THE most downloaded app in the world. People are playing it everywhere, offices, schools, and even on highways and while driving! Now I am not going to explain what the app is, because you really should just try it, even if it is to find out what the hype is about. More interesting are the crazy stories about players that are
surfacing.

" Two teenagers playing Pokemon Go late at night in their car in Florida were shot at by a householder who mistook them for burglars, police say.

The man said he shot at their car after they refused to stop when he challenged them on Saturday. They were not hurt.

He said that earlier he had heard the pair say "did you get anything?"

Now this story is funny because no one got hurt. But you can easy see how they were mistaken for burglars easy. People seem to become reckless without any concern for the law. This is easily trespassing if nothing else.

In Hawthorn, Wiltshire, 4 teens had to be rescued from caves after they ventured into the Box mines there. From a local spokesperson:

"They were looking for these Pokemon creatures and surprisingly they didn't find any, but it's obviously leading people into dangerous situations, such as this, and things are likely to escalate if people are going to follow the rules of this game."

But perhaps the most infamous person right now is this teen from Pittsburg, who crossed a highway to find a Pokemon, gets hit by a car, and blames the app. When a friend shared a Facebook post, it was already filled with angry fans asking why they were not hit by a car, and that nothing excuses the lack of personal responsibility. Presumably you HAVE to get that Pokemon, even if it is at the bottom of a ravine.

Pokemon Go is really a Pandora's box of hope and horror. In the gaming world, industry watchers are already seeing it as a pioneer for the next step in gaming. There is talk of Grand Theft Auto going in this direction for example. In the legal world, the lawsuits that will come from this app will be groundbreaking by nature. And kids are risking life and limb for it. News wise this really is a Donald Trump. You know that every other day some shocking Pokemon new tidbit will show up yet again. And therefore I will label this article as Part One.
