Figure Unboxing and Review: Orihara Izaya (Psychedelic Version)

Monday, September 12, 2016 / No Comments
With the new season of Durarara, we get a brand new figure of Orihara Izaya, as well as a re-issue of the original Izaya, Shizuo and Celty. This new Izaya figure is by Alter, and features Psyche (one of Izaya's alter personalities from the Psychedelic cover). There are numerous others who wish to get a matching Delic (Shizuo's alter personality from the same cover), but the article today wouldn't be about this.
Without further ado, let us move on to looking at this particular figure of Izaya!

Packaging

The main plan for Izaya's box is clear, with sides covered in opaque white and specked with pink which ties it in with his figure's color scheme of pink and white! The clear plastic gives a good unobstructed view of Izaya while the white walls display different views of the figure so you can choose which angle you'd like to view him at!

Next, we have Izaya in his blister packaging to see all the parts he comes with in one glance.
He comes with a pink base, a pole to hold Izaya up as well as a iPod-like device connected to a translucent pink wire that winds around Izaya and has a heart-shaped part.

Base
The base is incredibly simple, with a flat pink background and white making accents. White makes up a more designed inner circle and a thicker outer white circle in two shades (one with the similar pattern as the inner circle). The character's name and version type are mentioned on the base itself as well.

There is also a slot at the base for the pole to enter and that will be the sole support for this particular Izaya's figure which is hovering in mid-air.

Posing and Assembly

Whether it's with a white or a black background, the colors of this figure pops and the sculpt raises it to better, higher heights. I can just stare at this figure the whole day~
An instruction sheet is included with the figure to teach collectors how to assemble the figure onto the pole and then onto the base. As usual, Alter's figures don't include an English translation for their instruction sheets but their illustrations are typically self-explanatory.

If anything puts me off for this figure, it would be the wire of the device. First, you'll have to slip the main body of the device into Izaya's hand, then maneuver the pink translucent wire until it fits with how it looks on the prototype.
Not to mention, the pegs that would hold the wire to the figure itself aren't very obvious on the main body as compared to in the illustrations, and the wire looks and is actually quite fragile and flimsy.

Sculpting and Painting
We see that Izaya's features are nicely sculpted and his collarbones are well-defined and perfectly drool-worthy as well. In addition, the white fluff at his coat really look fluffy, other than how it actually isn't. The sleeves of his white coat are creased at all the right areas, especially for the arm that's raised, and catches light at the right areas to further increase the dimensions.
Even from the back, Izaya's sculpt doesn't let up. Everything is still well-maintained and of fluid composition when compared to the sculpt on his front. I especially love how his hood looks!
The next point of contact is his shoes. The hot pink soles makes his feet pop out against the palette of white, which is a very good play considering how his feet are raised in the air due to his pose. This draws attention to his shoes, which wouldn't usually be shown in other figures which are more static, and since we are able to see something usually hidden, it appears as if there is more dimension to this figure, making his pose appear seemingly more dynamic!
Oh and now on this figure we see... a sliver of skin at Izaya's waist that's showing because of his shirt hiking up! And Alter has definitely not cut any corners because below that we see...

A grey lining reading "Psychedelic"~

Perhaps this is a hint that "Delic" might be coming out soon too? I'll leave that to your imagination!

Catching up: A month in, a new schedule and picking out songs...

It has already been a little more than a month since I entered NS.

I got to say, it changed quite a few things for me. On one side of the spectrum, I feel exhausted,

training every day, marching all around, cleaning the bunk so we won’t get screwed. I miss the mainland a lot when I’m there and the 2 years feel so far away. But on the other hand, I actually find it nice there. When you’re there, you are shut out from the world and you have time to think about yourself (amidst all the training). The air is clear there, where I feel slightly suffocated when I book out. It disciplines you on your behaviour and your preferences. Since you can’t choose your food, it helps you to be less picky about what you eat. There you learn to work as a team a lot. Everyone must work together and no man gets left behind.

My schedule has changed once again where now I have to watch around 7 days’ worth in one sitting. It’s not so bad as I have done that before but repeatedly doing it has been making it quite a chore as I don’t just watch anime.

I watch YouTube, surf the web, read manga and light novels and doing all that in one day is really tiring. At times I play Overwatch and the schedule gets even packed (I play a lot of Mei recently. I really like how she can build up her ultimate fast). No matter how much I complain, not much can be done to help it. There are some shows that I want to drop as it drains a lot from me just watching it but for now it’s still in my watching list. There are a lot of movies and OVA that came out this season, so I might watch them as a break from watching the usual shows.

I have a hard time picking out the songs for this season.

One reason is because I have limited time to use my phone once I’m in camp and I’m afraid of using it when I return home from booking out as I’m in my uniform. Second is because I am really tired from all the physical training. Another reason is that, and this is my personal opinion, this season’s songs are not as great. There are some good ones but the others didn’t really stick for me. Were my expectations too high for this season?

STGCC was another thing that I wanted to go to but I couldn’t as I booked out late on Saturday. I would have gone to it on Sunday but I prioritise something else before that.

I finally bought the remaining light novels for Spice & Wolf. I have been waiting so long to complete it and now I can properly read the whole series again.

As a bonus I got the third volume for Mushoku Tensei. I really hope the light novel gets translated soon. On the way back from Kinokuniya, I managed to see some cosplayers returning from STGCC either buying dinner or just walking around. It’s really interesting to see the reaction of people passing by as they look at the colourful and detailed costumes they put on. One that caught my eye was the Judy and Nick cosplay from Zootopia. People were smiling when they see the ears and tails.

I really miss going to events. I probably won't be going to AFA this year as it’ll be in the later part of BMT and I’ll probably be tuckered out. But it’s okay. I’m saving up money for something greater than that. Just three more months. I hope I have slightly more than enough by then.

My first visit to Singapore Toy, Game and Comic Convention

Saturday, September 10, 2016 / No Comments

When I was given the opportunity to cover the 2016 edition of the Singapore Toy, Game and Comic Convention along with fellow writer, Justin (his take on the event), I jumped at the chance, considering I missed it last year. Although the scope of STGCC is more 'Westernised', featuring the crusaders from Marvel, DC and other publishers in that hemisphere, I figured it would be a refreshing departure from what we usually cover.

The exhibition halls weren't as crowded as the first photo might suggest, seeing that everyone would've been spread out across the two halls. However, that didn't last long as snaking queues soon formed for the Hot Toys and XM Studios booths, with fervent collectors aiming to add that exclusive figurine or diorama to their showcase at home. On closer inspection, its apparent to anyone why they sell like hotcakes, sporting detailed sculpting and vivid colours with close to no flaws.

This Mysterio scale figure was a sleeper hit for me. The Spider-Man villain's mysterious visage was perfectly reproduced and even when I viewed it up close, there was nary a face to be seen. XM Studios nailed it with this one and it's a pity that the more famous and outlandish characters received more attention.

Sadly, I'm a passionate fan of one of these outlandish and brash Marvel characters. Be it for his dazzling gold and crimson armoured suits or his dry wit and cavalier attitude, Tony Stark AKA Iron Man has been drawing moviegoers to the cinema since the first Iron Man movie in 2008.

The Mark VII suit stood out for me in particular, being featured in the last act of The Avengers. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched Tony Stark equipping the armour in mid-air after being thrown out of Stark Towers by Loki.

Perhaps its best I move on before this post quickly erodes into an ode for Iron Man. Not forgetting the 'Game' aspect of STGCC, I finally tried my hand at Magic the Gathering. Truth be told, I only wanted the quirky hat that I kept seeing around the convention but ended up learning why the TCG was so popular. It was easy to learn and featured the mechanics from TCGs that I still play or had experience with, such as the mana system and 'summoning sickness' of Duel Masters and the HP/Attack system from Hearthstone.

An Overwatch tournament was being held throughout the course of the day and I would stop by from time to time to catch the matches, especially when I needed a breather from all the walking and photo-taking. Free Mountain Dew was handed out at the side so I effectively killed two birds with one stone. I suspect this was intentionally set up to attract viewers for the Overwatch tournament too. Kudos to the hardworking staff members walking around dispensing the drink from containers strapped to their back.

A convention isn't complete without cosplayers and they came out in full force today, although these guys stole the show, in my opinion at least. The 501st Legion needs not introduction, showing off their different outfits from the Star Wars franchise, be it the Jedi, Stormtroopers or even Kylo Ren, antagonist of the latest Star Wars film.

The Spider-Man cosplayers were impressive as well, sporting costumes from different eras in the Spider-Man comics and even the spandex suits from other people who filled the Spider-Man role alongside Peter Parker.

As simple as piecing together this outfit might be for Hugh Jackman's doppleganger over here, I'm sure the time and effort taken to create Wolverine's signature mutton chops and muscled physique is far from easy.

I didn't manage to get any photos of them but Re:Zero fans will be delighted to see the many Rems and Rams strolling through the exhibition center, along with the occasional Felt and Emilia. Your usual host of Love Live! cosplayers are there too, fret not.

Fortunately or otherwise, I managed to avoid excessively splurging on merchandise, only buying Kongou and Deadpool t-shirts. Although the scale figures featuring the many Marvel, DC and Star Wars characters had dynamic poses and close to perfect sculpting and colouring, I had no interest in purchasing them and ultimately, I'd rather admire them at conventions like these or in photos.

I spent almost the whole day at STGCC 2016, taking the necessary breaks now and then. It's a refreshing convention for me, considering I'm immersed in anime and manga on a daily basis. The only complaint I have would be how remote the main stage area is, being tucked away in a corner behind the Cosplay Celebs booth. Talks and presentations that might've piqued my interest went unattended as the other booths and events drew me in instead.

Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention 2016

To whom this may (or may not) concern:

It was a rainy morning, at least it was where I had set off from. The time was just a little after 8.30am, and the umbrella had threatened to fly away even when the wind didn't feel that strong in the first place. Never mind. Nothing could ruin my small excitement for what was about to happen. Yeah, the annual Singapore Toy, Game and Comic Convention held at Marina Bay Sands! This would be my third time attending, and I had thanked the stars. So I forgot all about the rain and the packed train (pardon the rhyme). To MBS I went.

You would think that having been there for the third time should be more of a breeze for me. Nope, it wasn't. I was immediately overwhelmed by the rather inefficient arrangement to collect the pass and such. I was only relieved that I didn't have to wait too long to get in. Just look at the madness! I wouldn't want to know just how early those people were. The air was somewhat stale. The anticipation from everybody (yeah me too) had sucked out all the oxygen around. Never mind. Patience used to be a virtue, until the very last minute.

Okay, so we were finally spared from further agony. Before the massive human sandwich evolved further, I quickly looked around for some ideas. Ah, badges! I remember the people from Secret Garden, a group based in Thailand. I used to buy their Free! Eternal Summer series. Unfortunately, nothing had caught my eyes this time. Nonetheless, it was lovely to see many new designs under their belt. Since Pokemon Go became a nationwide hit, the characters were definitely part of the line-up. Pikachu, Pikachu and more Pikachu. I didn't feel much for it though. There were even Pikachu hats for sale!

Of course, there was a balance of both East and West across the convention. The Superheroes Cafe by DC Comics had churned out some fancy pastries and ice-cream. Okay, so I took the picture before any of said items was around. Anyway, the presence of superheroes was increasingly glowing, particularly the big displays of toys and such nearer to the entrance of the hall. I spotted the members of Suicide Squad in their cute forms! There was also a large drawing featuring the Marvel superheroes hovering above our local sights. I saw the Merlion, Singapore Flyer, MBS and the Esplanade!

Speaking of drawing, there were some people from Band of Doodlers starting on a rather large piece of drawing. I was intrigued by the magical breath of life injected through those marker pens. Oh, I had managed to capture a few cosplayers in the process. They looked really cool despite those tight costumes.

Back at the Japanese department were some of my childhood memories: Doraemon and Super Mario! If I had the capacity to take great care of figures, I would definitely sweep all of those without a thought. Yeah, there was also Pikachu sharing the limelight. It looked contented though.

Candylicious had a grand display of many different candies at its booth, and the two teddy bears right in the middle could just kill anybody. As if those candies weren't sweet enough already! I used to be really fascinated by one of those gigantic lollipops. Did people actually sink their teeth into one of those things and survived?

Large posters and t-shirts were also part of the highlights. I had watched some episodes of Bungou Stray Dogs and Assassination Classroom. As much as I wanted to finish both series, I just couldn't. Anyway, there were lucky bags for sale as well. Lucky bags would essentially surprise with several random items related to a certain anime series, and the bigger the purchase would result in more exciting merchandise.

Of course, I didn't forget the music. TAMUSIC and AKAIRYUSEI did short live pieces at their booth to entice the visitors. I loved the enthusiasm and energy from those guys! Their violin and keyboard were indeed a heavenly match. Oh, and they liked Pringles. Just saying.

The massive human sandwich had evolved uncontrollably. The symptoms of claustrophobia had sunk in. Well, it was still quite an adventure nonetheless!

Eccentrically Yours.
